Hey question guys, why do we consider gender to not be synonymous with sex? It was for a really long time and it changed recently to where everyone and their mother knows "it's social". What was the reason behind the change?

I thought it could possibly be that since I knew the change in term came from that paedophile psychologist in the 70's or was it the 60's? I just didnt know why everyone was on board with the change
