Honestly you'd be best off learning multiple martial arts and just using what sticks. For example, some Karate is okay for striking but don't keep the rigidity of the kata and kiai nonsense.

I recommend a nice striking art like Boxing, Kenpo, or Shotokan and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu or Wrestling for on the ground.

Tae Kwon Do if you like kicks.

And now a days most Karate is bs, but some out there is okayish.

I prefer the schools that allow full-contact sparring and competition.
