It's a common misconception that science proves things. This is probably because that type of stuff is not covered much in science classes.

Science can disprove things. Science can support a hypothesis. As you do this multiple times, there gets to be an accumulation of evidence. When there is a large amount of evidence in favor of something and little or none against something we gain confidence.

There's the problem. When someone claims "it's not proven therefore I can ignore it" I ask show one thing that's proven and get no answer.
