Wouldn't it take a lot of work to fake it? Like, it would cost a heck to fake it all - bear in mind its the 60s where we didn't have the best technology. It would probably be cheaper just to go into space.

Note that if you go 1KM, the earth does curve HOWEVER its not even noticeable - i believe its around 0.08 of the earths circumference. Not enough to see a curve.
