If it's just more frequent searching I wouldn't say that there's anything wrong with it
Sorry I didn't know you guys had an actual Alexa bot
Hey, I know the majority of this server is pro-Brexit. Is the main consensus that the European project is inherently broken and should be abolished entirely or just that Britain's position within it specifically was a net negative to the country.
What do you guys think should be the main strategy to make UK industries competitive again post-Brexit? Right now the UK is very dependent on the financial industry and London in particular, and a lot of banks will want to leave to stay in the European market.
The UK is much larger than Singapore, plus Singapore is an authoritarian state and can probably only work as an authoritarian state
Thatcher is to blame for this IMO, she purposefully gave up on British manifacturing to crush the labor movement
Buying stuff is not the problem IMO, there will be new tariffs but other countries will still want to sell to the UK
But how is the UK going to get the foreign currencies to pay for everything
The euro is probably the worst functioning part of the EU right now
People complain about immigration but most of the UK immigration was from commonwealth countries
And the EU is actually investing money in Frontex now
I highly recommend Yanis Varoufakis' book on the Eurocrisis if you're interested in the continental economy
It's not perfect but it's a really good discription of how the deficit countries have just completely surrendered control of their finances to the Eurogroup and Germany in particular
I'm in good company here then ๐
Merkel's statement was meant for one particular group of immigrants in Hungary IIRC
She didn't literally invite the entire world in
And most of these people already wanted to come to Europe anyway, they didn't need the German chancellor to invite them
Merkel doesn't control the migration policy of any country but Germany, the most she did after the supposed "invitation" was argue for migrant redistribution among member states IIRC
Which to be fair was a really bad idea because all the migrants want to be in the Western countries anyway
@Amir The way the EU and member countries share power is very complex, there's no EU conspiracy that tells everyone what to do. The place where Germany has the most power is in dictating the financial policies of deficit countries. Even though member countries have to abide by EU legislation, national governments can also veto a lot of that legislation in the European Council
Meaning that if even one country out of 28 vetoes it the new law doesn't pass
So the problem is political corruption in national governments more than the EU itself?
@Nordhand I know lol they did it in the Netherlands too
And Ireland for another referendum
That's why I always cringe when people post stuff about how the EU is "standing up for Ireland" in the Brexit negotiations
At the same time a lot of the current chaos around Brexit is the Tories' fault as well
Since they couldn't pass their deal because they got crushed in the negotiations + the Northern Ireland question
Although there really was no easy way forward for them since the EU has much more economic leverage
That's true but a huge chunk of the UK economy is the London finance bubble, which depends largely on access to the single market
Ulster is rightful Irish land, change my mind
@Nordhand What were they supposed to offer lol? Single-market-but-for-banks-only?
@Broo TulsiGang 2024 ๐ฌ๐ง ๐บ๐ธ They probably will if Brexit continues to go the way it has gone so far
@galesteppes Sometimes I feel like Mountbatten deserved to get shanked
He wanted to shag his Romanov cousin
As if the European royal families hadn't seen enough incest already
@Angus We should have those under Christianity as well
Profit should only be made from nature and human labor
In my experience most Muslims are not devout, they don't have any real devotion to Islamic doctrine or profound spiritual experiences, they're just scared of their neighbours shittalking them for not being pious enough
@Angus It's not the real old testament without the dead sea scrolls and obscure Ethiopian books
No, that was how they actually thought the world was created with their limited knowledge of the natural world
@M4Gunner I'm pretty sure if you told St. Peter that he would send you straight to hell
@M4Gunner Some protestant churches believe in the St. Peter and the keys of heaven thing as well
If religion were true, wouldn't the state have a responsibility to prevent its citizens from going to hell?
Christianity has always been a faith for beggars, thieves and whores, at least that's what the pagans thought of it
The fringes of society were always the first to convert to Christianity
Same thing with the lower castes of India and Islam, which makes sense since the Muslims at least treated them like humans
If you convert to Christianity, or one branch of Christianity just to fight Muslims you're not a sincere Christian and something is wrong with you
@MountainMan Gustav Adolf gang
Within Christianity you're supposed to have a higher loyalty than to the earthly church or the earthly state of the faith
The only part of the Bible where God cares about ethnicity is when he forbids Jews from marrying Canaanites lol
Why can't we just teach them the values without all the mystical rituals attached?
There is no global deep state, just a large class of rich people who act in their individual interests which happen to be mostly the same
I agree that there has to be a sort of transcendence in it
But tying it to a story that most people know to be false just undermines it
@M4Gunner If you're a Christian you ought to say that lol
@kodec The part in Genesis where they do an honor killing
@Angus What incentive would the participants of such an organization have to blindly follow some sort of central plan which they are not sure that they will benefit from, when they are already powerful?
There's no need for any kind of central coordination for them to fuck around.
@M4Gunner To be fair the church itself has not been doing a good job of keeping perverts at bay either
I'm not sure about it all the time though to be fair
I'm conflicted on Buddhism because on the one thing I think some of the teachings are really profound, especially the part about the non-existence of the self. But on the other hand I also know that Buddhism preaches a very inward focus among practitioners that has been used historically to reinforce profoundly unjust societies like the Mongol Empire, Tibetan feudal state, Khmer Empire, etc.
The daughter of the communist dictator of Bulgaria was really interested in eastern spirituality as well
Christianity has been growing in Russia since the 90's IIRC
@MountainMan Yeah the celibacy thing is only in Catholicism IIRC
@MountainMan I think that's only in Anglicanism and some minority protestant churches
Unironic honkpill posting is just a woke way of giving up
Reality is not absurd, there are rules that it operates by
You just don't see them if you experience the world only through shallow and disconnected media fragments
If that's the case I'm making up a religion where you get 73
At least there is some interfaith solidarity with nonmuslims
