So I got a little tecsun FM/MW/SW radio, but playing around with it I barely pick up anything from the local area on the MW / SW. Any cheap and light options for a serious SHTF scenario? I'm not bothered by 2 way communication.

2020-02-04 19:38:09 UTC

I have a baofeng

2020-02-04 19:38:19 UTC

I can pick up repeaters with the Nagoya antenna

2020-02-05 19:59:43 UTC

found my baofeng radios

2020-02-05 20:08:28 UTC

I got a baofeng uv-5rtp recently and was bummed when I realized the local repeater near me is in the 220 band

2020-02-05 20:08:49 UTC

I was thinking about returning this one and getting a tri-band, but at this point I'm not sure I want to be getting anything from china in the mail

2020-02-05 20:09:36 UTC

would it be worth it to get a tri-band if only for that local repeater, or can I expect other folks to be on the VHF and UHF bands when the boogaloo happens

2020-02-05 20:11:45 UTC

I don't think anything *from* China is going to be showing up in your mail anytime soon lmao

2020-02-05 20:12:23 UTC

kek

2020-02-05 20:14:09 UTC

lol

2020-02-05 20:14:12 UTC

you know what I mean, though

2020-02-05 20:14:33 UTC

I feel like at this point, getting something shipped to me through the mail is a risk

2020-02-05 20:14:44 UTC

since this thing can survive for up to 5 days on surfaces

2020-02-05 20:17:20 UTC

Theoretically you could decon with a bleach or alcohol solution in a spray bottle

2020-02-05 20:17:55 UTC

I'm not a scientist, but I'm pretty sure that's how you decon just about anything else

2020-02-05 20:22:21 UTC

Yeah, aight. I got it, haha

2020-02-05 20:22:28 UTC

I'll just spray it down when it comes tomorrow

2020-02-05 20:23:07 UTC

Tbh I think I'll keep the first one I got too, can't hurt to have a spare radio

2020-02-05 20:25:20 UTC

Yeah it's never about how many guns *you* have, it's about how spread out they are in your squad.
Two hands are good, four is handtastic.

2020-02-05 20:25:37 UTC

Depends on how tight you are with your bros

2020-02-05 20:26:43 UTC

I don't really have a "squad" to speak of

2020-02-05 20:27:02 UTC

My roommate thinks he's going to be able to get out of town before the roads get fucked--spoiler alert, he won't

2020-02-08 01:07:47 UTC

bug in not out

2020-02-08 01:07:54 UTC

internet wont go down

2020-02-08 21:35:56 UTC

I suppose it's harder for SWAT stacks to get blueprints for homes and then navigate them than it is to move freely innawoods

2020-02-08 21:36:29 UTC

you can get surrounded innawoods fast and pinpointed by thermals on ghetto birds

2020-02-08 21:36:58 UTC

there're more chokepoints in your home and it's *your* home, a place familiar to you

2020-02-08 21:37:24 UTC

I feel like the former has more options for movement than the latter though

2020-02-08 21:37:43 UTC

oh fuck I forgot about police dogs

2020-02-08 21:37:46 UTC

entirely

2020-02-08 22:14:40 UTC

If you're researched you cant really do a lot

2020-02-09 05:48:54 UTC

yeah except for the part that youre in one spot and immobile, and they will know where you are and can starve you out

2020-02-09 05:49:19 UTC

wheras the socalled infrared drone wont be able to find you if youre smart and know how to go outdoors

2020-02-09 05:49:40 UTC

you can go ahead and change youre post to only bug out if you have outdoors skills and if youre a NEET then stay in the basement

@bear market how would you conceal infrared radiation when theres no snow and stuff to cover yourself?

2020-02-09 18:53:08 UTC

Mylar

2020-02-09 18:53:46 UTC

If you have a mylar poncho u cant be spotted on infrared

2020-02-09 20:16:59 UTC

makeshift yagi antenna

2020-02-09 20:44:47 UTC

Explain this

2020-02-09 20:45:38 UTC

@Dad mylar and regulation of body temp also breath. but those infrared cameras aren't good enough yet to differentiate between human and animal at a distance. they mainly look for campfires

2020-02-10 16:00:09 UTC

Thinking about investing into a police scanner

2020-02-10 19:27:32 UTC

@Ann Hiro probably a good investment. Easy way to get intel during a disaster even if other comms are down

2020-02-11 06:39:45 UTC

i wouldnt because theyre programmed to your area and you can just google the frequencies and put them into a baofeng to listen

2020-02-11 18:38:30 UTC

does anyone do ham radio or whatever is popular now? how does one get into it?

2020-02-11 19:38:44 UTC

Best way to start I'd guess would be a scanner. See if radio is useful for you.

2020-02-11 19:38:56 UTC

Conceivably, in the event of emergency, Radio is one of the first things up.

2020-02-11 19:39:36 UTC

It's easily the best way for people to communicate quickly.

2020-02-13 15:57:13 UTC
2020-02-13 15:58:11 UTC

Still to spendy

2020-02-13 15:58:35 UTC

I need to find the article, but a variation of these were being used EXTENSIVELY in the Hong Kong protests after cell service got blocked

2020-02-13 15:58:55 UTC

oh yeah it's spendy but I thought it was interesting regardless

2020-02-14 04:23:10 UTC
2020-02-14 04:23:17 UTC

what zip code do you live in?

2020-02-14 04:24:05 UTC

https://hamstudy.org/ is good to start. you can find find a free test near you and likely also a class if you want

2020-02-14 04:24:26 UTC

do the flash cards for the technician class license until you have them pretty much memorized

2020-02-14 04:24:46 UTC

and heres a class

2020-02-14 08:21:25 UTC

thanks guy! i was talking to a friend at work and he's interested in getting into ham radio too.

2020-02-15 22:24:12 UTC

its better if you have a friend you can do it with

2020-02-19 02:17:42 UTC

Is Craigslist a viable option for finding a CB/HAM radio on the cheap? What's a good price?

2020-02-19 02:36:47 UTC

Seeing like $100ish for CB/marine radios in my area

2020-02-19 02:44:43 UTC

Check pawn shops/flea markets for CBs.

2020-02-19 02:47:29 UTC

Both the ones I have now came from garage sales

2020-02-19 02:56:29 UTC

cool, thanks

2020-02-20 02:51:01 UTC

get an rtl sdr

2020-02-20 16:29:06 UTC

Found this in my photo folder, don't know if it was posted before

2020-02-20 16:39:14 UTC

It was

2020-02-20 16:39:28 UTC

When in doubt check pins

2020-02-20 16:39:52 UTC

<:apuscream:673747068782903306>

2020-02-20 16:40:03 UTC

Will do next time

2020-02-24 10:03:58 UTC

do all radios have to be registered? I'm planning to buy a small radio for a shtf kit

2020-02-24 15:22:43 UTC

Idk about registered but to use it you need a license

2020-02-24 15:22:50 UTC

But thatโ€™s for USA

2020-02-24 15:23:45 UTC

You need a license for specific frequencies

2020-02-24 15:24:20 UTC

HAMboomers will report you if you arenโ€™t licensed

2020-02-24 15:24:21 UTC

can they track who's who in those frequencies or can you just lurk and listen in?

2020-02-24 15:24:54 UTC

you can lurk

2020-02-24 15:25:23 UTC

They can't track shit unless you transmit

2020-02-24 15:25:39 UTC

that's what I'm aiming for

2020-02-24 15:26:24 UTC

Start with something like this

2020-02-24 15:26:47 UTC

Lets you learn about what you're doing while you're doing it.

2020-02-24 16:48:36 UTC

would a walkie-talkie do the job in a shtf scenario where i have my buddy across town?

2020-02-24 16:51:16 UTC

get a $25 baofeng

2020-02-24 17:01:01 UTC

nice, just looked it up and they distribute where i live

2020-02-24 17:01:24 UTC

srsly joining this discord was a better investment then watching hours of prepping channels on yt

2020-02-24 17:01:53 UTC

based and whitepilled honestly it was

2020-02-24 19:25:36 UTC

get a ham radio license

2020-02-24 19:25:41 UTC
2020-02-24 19:35:20 UTC

Free men don't ask permission. SHTF licensure won't mean shit anyways

2020-02-24 20:16:14 UTC

a license while the grid is still up is useful though, just so you don't get v& for practicing your radio skillz
