@UncleDrMrBaby the purpose of getting the license is to know what youre doing instead of being a ding dong with a poochang radio that bleeds 5 mhz and has like 1 mile range on a good day

2020-02-25 20:13:59 UTC

The Baofeng uv 860 was just released. It should be exactly like the original uv 5r, same price, same performance, same everything but a few things have improved

2020-02-25 20:14:29 UTC

It can be charged directly, the battery is 50% larger and you can charge it without a charging stand. Thats it.

2020-02-25 20:15:20 UTC

So I recommend you get that (22$ shipping included) and a cheap 2$ nagoya NA-771 antenna

2020-02-25 20:20:23 UTC

Some other baofengs claim to be higher wattage - thats a plain chink lie. They do not perform better. Also a "triband" baofeng will be useless - Nobody uses the additional 220-260MHz range and itll be plaqued by distortions from digital tv and uncomprehensable digital intereference of every kind.

2020-02-25 20:21:52 UTC

22???

2020-02-25 20:21:55 UTC

dude thats fucking nice

2020-02-25 20:21:57 UTC

what does it do exactly

2020-02-25 20:22:02 UTC

If you want to make international or worldwide communication you will a transceiver for the lower frequencys (30mhz) as they bounce of the ionosphere and thus over the horizon and around the world. The ubitx is the cheapest option starting at 100$. It can be operated from a 12v battery

2020-02-25 20:22:21 UTC

@Pepito Well you speak into it, the signal is send out as a 4w fm signal

2020-02-25 20:22:52 UTC

Gives you 10-100km range depending on the severity of obstruction

2020-02-25 20:23:53 UTC

in very rare instances and under special weather conditions (sporadic f) youll get over the horizon distances (read a few hunderd kilometers) in a random direction.

2020-02-25 20:26:20 UTC

Oh and for extra bonus points you can connect it to your phone or computer and use that as a modem. Enabling you to send text and data at up to 1000 bit per second

2020-02-25 20:29:57 UTC

I've got the UV-5XPs

2020-02-25 20:31:34 UTC

I hope youre not using the stock antenna

2020-02-25 20:32:38 UTC

I am. I don't know how to tune those fuckers.

2020-02-25 20:33:03 UTC

I can tune a CB antenna like nobody's business.

2020-02-25 20:33:25 UTC

Just connect it.

2020-02-25 20:33:39 UTC

I mean, if its not diy itll just work

2020-02-25 20:33:55 UTC

But i mean a 6 inch, a 48 inch, a 2 inch

2020-02-25 20:34:13 UTC

Idk what the drawbacks for each are. Do they limit bandwidth, sap power?

2020-02-25 20:34:27 UTC

Will an 8 inch antenna kill SWR?

2020-02-25 20:34:30 UTC

etc...

2020-02-25 20:36:41 UTC

There are many different types of antenna for frequencys and use , required spectrum and portability over range

2020-02-25 20:37:10 UTC

But for your standard 2m fm transceiver theres not much you need to look out for

2020-02-25 20:37:58 UTC

This is especially true for something like the baofeng uv 5r or similar

2020-02-25 20:39:06 UTC

I have two UV-5XPs and two BF-888s

2020-02-25 20:39:24 UTC

UV-5s for b00g shit, BF-888s for around the property

2020-02-25 20:45:44 UTC

Well if you desperatly need to save 6$ over a uv 5r / 860. Wouldnt recommend it though as itll have difficulty transmitting through a forest due to the limited uhf frequency and halfed power

2020-02-25 20:46:22 UTC

At that price point you might aswell get the BF-T3 lol

2020-02-25 20:46:33 UTC

serious though

2020-02-25 20:55:11 UTC

But all the other "high powered" are rebranded uv 5r with same output

2020-02-25 20:56:26 UTC

Just an FYI for anyone 'worried' about legality... Every single radio in the Baofeng UV family is illegal to own without a license.

2020-02-25 20:56:37 UTC

*transmit on

2020-02-25 20:56:43 UTC

They're all capable of transmitting on restricted frequencies and over 1 watt

2020-02-25 20:57:32 UTC

wattage isnt an issue for the free max 0.5 watt walkie talkie frequencys . Goverment seals are

2020-02-25 20:58:17 UTC

so illegal to transmit or own?

2020-02-25 20:58:22 UTC

Transmit.

2020-02-25 20:59:28 UTC

Not that anyone will notice on the lpd 433 or pmr446 bands (walkie talkie freqency) though. Especially if you use low power mode. Itll be indistinguishable

2020-02-25 21:03:54 UTC
2020-02-25 21:03:57 UTC

is that the good shit

2020-02-25 21:14:04 UTC

That looks to be the same as the 20$ uv-5r. Dont buy its a ripoff

2020-02-25 21:14:27 UTC

Well it supports digital i guess

2020-02-25 21:15:41 UTC

If you absolutly insist on dmr buy ive read good stuff about this version https://www.radioddity.com/products/radioddity-x-baofeng-rd-5r-dmr-ham-amateur-two-way-radio

2020-02-25 21:16:23 UTC

Keep in mind that these digital radioes are not encrypted as you might believe

2020-02-25 21:17:17 UTC

If you want that the only way, and very illegal at that would be to either shell out 1000$ for a commercial one or connect your 20$ uv-5r to your android phone and send encrypted pgp messages over it. Dont do that until after the apocalypse though

2020-02-25 21:22:59 UTC

>TL;DR; for everyone else. Buy ubitx (starting at 100$) for international com. Buy baofeng 860 (22$) + nagoya 771 antenna (2$) for 10-100km range.

2020-02-25 22:09:02 UTC

you will not get 10km range on a poochang with a nagoya 771

2020-02-25 22:09:20 UTC

not to mention the baofungus are analog radios, not digital

2020-02-25 22:34:10 UTC

I did 1.5 miles on open ground

2020-02-25 22:34:48 UTC

At that range it was *rough*

2020-02-26 20:36:47 UTC

@bear market Liar. I listen in on my local repeater which is behind a hill/forest and 22km away. Readable with practically no difficulty

2020-02-26 20:39:35 UTC

Readable, maybe. Sure. But transmittable?

2020-02-26 20:40:49 UTC

@qiwinom I can rx shortwave from across the world on a 20 dollar chink radio from Amazon, but do you know what kind of system it takes to transmit even across the country?

2020-02-26 20:45:42 UTC

@UncleDrMrBaby I dont recall trying that or if it worked from behind the hill. But Line of sight will always work. If there is no obstruction between you you can reach it, always - even with low power. Thats why you can reliable communicate with the ISS with your baofeng and the proper antenna. In fact you are advised to use the low power setting for that

2020-02-26 20:47:42 UTC

the key is the proper antenna and also proper weather conditions

2020-02-26 20:48:10 UTC

because radio is more sensitive to particulates than visible light

2020-02-26 20:48:38 UTC

I haven't been into radios (outside CB) since middle school. Soldered my own shortwave receiver kit together, made a 300ft antenna on the roof and listened away

2020-02-26 20:48:56 UTC

I'm getting back into it now

2020-02-26 21:08:21 UTC

I have legit no experience in any of this stuff, but i feel its important and i need to learn it

2020-02-26 21:28:56 UTC

everyone whos a prepper should be a ham radio operator

2020-02-26 21:29:23 UTC

not only is does it give you a way to practice a very important skill, but theres a ton of preppers on ham radio and you could network with them locally

2020-02-27 00:25:52 UTC

Train for the basic license @shazoooo

2020-02-28 00:50:18 UTC

we need some amatuer radio operator nutjob to open up an apocalypse radio on the AM shortwaves

2020-02-28 03:25:18 UTC

160m is full of preppers and crazy people

2020-02-28 03:28:03 UTC

Oh frick I'm a wanna be "prepper" and I might not be crazy but I've been called a paranoid asshole, unfortunately I'm also poor and shit so....

2020-02-28 06:47:50 UTC

I only have 2 and 6 m <:pinkwojak:673420781182779442> <:pinkwojak:673420781182779442>

2020-02-28 06:48:04 UTC

Fuck I should have take my General already

2020-02-28 18:52:10 UTC

I went to channel 160 and there ain't shit

2020-02-28 18:52:19 UTC

I think I'm the only one prepped for the boog in my vicinity

2020-02-28 19:29:32 UTC

I keep finding channels where I get full bars and it's just white noise

2020-02-28 19:36:26 UTC

rolled right back around and none of my channels are populated but the NOAA one

2020-02-28 19:36:30 UTC

smh

2020-02-28 19:37:50 UTC

at least on uhf

2020-02-29 11:08:28 UTC

what you think 160m means?

2020-02-29 11:33:00 UTC

Is it 160 meter?

2020-02-29 11:33:33 UTC

I'm big brainlet on the ham and getting a license means going out to cironaland

2020-02-29 21:41:32 UTC

yeah

2020-02-29 21:41:48 UTC

the large wavelength bands are classified under "high frequency"

2020-03-01 02:49:26 UTC

Its the length of one full oscilation

2020-03-01 02:49:30 UTC

1hz is one light year

2020-03-01 02:49:35 UTC

2hz is half a light year

2020-03-01 02:49:39 UTC

and so forth

2020-03-01 02:50:19 UTC

Wifi is 12.5cm

2020-03-01 07:47:48 UTC

@Reveretneon no, the high frequency is lower wavelength

2020-03-01 07:52:19 UTC

You're

2020-03-01 07:52:21 UTC

Right

2020-03-01 07:53:09 UTC

I was thinking of 160cm

Recommend ant for Beofeng ur5v? Keep seeing Nagoya 771 but thereโ€™s a lot of random name 771 fakery on eBay and Amazon

2020-03-04 12:40:00 UTC

UV-5r no longer fool proof recommendation due to price doubling recently in the aftermath of coronavirus

2020-03-04 12:40:50 UTC

and that guide is missleading

2020-03-04 14:57:26 UTC

d

2020-03-04 19:03:01 UTC

got mine 2 years back, 3 with pgm cable, extended battery packs and PTT with earpiece / mic boom (total airsoft larp but whatever) - still has the stock antenna on.

2020-03-04 21:09:04 UTC

actually its this one
