@UncleDrMrBaby the purpose of getting the license is to know what youre doing instead of being a ding dong with a poochang radio that bleeds 5 mhz and has like 1 mile range on a good day
The Baofeng uv 860 was just released. It should be exactly like the original uv 5r, same price, same performance, same everything but a few things have improved
It can be charged directly, the battery is 50% larger and you can charge it without a charging stand. Thats it.
So I recommend you get that (22$ shipping included) and a cheap 2$ nagoya NA-771 antenna
Some other baofengs claim to be higher wattage - thats a plain chink lie. They do not perform better. Also a "triband" baofeng will be useless - Nobody uses the additional 220-260MHz range and itll be plaqued by distortions from digital tv and uncomprehensable digital intereference of every kind.
22???
dude thats fucking nice
what does it do exactly
If you want to make international or worldwide communication you will a transceiver for the lower frequencys (30mhz) as they bounce of the ionosphere and thus over the horizon and around the world. The ubitx is the cheapest option starting at 100$. It can be operated from a 12v battery
@Pepito Well you speak into it, the signal is send out as a 4w fm signal
Gives you 10-100km range depending on the severity of obstruction
in very rare instances and under special weather conditions (sporadic f) youll get over the horizon distances (read a few hunderd kilometers) in a random direction.
Oh and for extra bonus points you can connect it to your phone or computer and use that as a modem. Enabling you to send text and data at up to 1000 bit per second
I've got the UV-5XPs
I hope youre not using the stock antenna
I am. I don't know how to tune those fuckers.
I can tune a CB antenna like nobody's business.
Just connect it.
I mean, if its not diy itll just work
But i mean a 6 inch, a 48 inch, a 2 inch
Idk what the drawbacks for each are. Do they limit bandwidth, sap power?
Will an 8 inch antenna kill SWR?
etc...
There are many different types of antenna for frequencys and use , required spectrum and portability over range
But for your standard 2m fm transceiver theres not much you need to look out for
This is especially true for something like the baofeng uv 5r or similar
I have two UV-5XPs and two BF-888s
UV-5s for b00g shit, BF-888s for around the property
Well if you desperatly need to save 6$ over a uv 5r / 860. Wouldnt recommend it though as itll have difficulty transmitting through a forest due to the limited uhf frequency and halfed power
At that price point you might aswell get the BF-T3 lol
serious though
Oh hey apparently there exists one new high power baofeng now https://de.banggood.com/BAOFENG-BF-F8HP-8W-UV-Dual-Band-Two-way-Radio-Walkie-Talkie-Flashlight-Hiking-Civilian-Intercom-p-1592336.html?rmmds=search&ID=47758&cur_warehouse=CN
But all the other "high powered" are rebranded uv 5r with same output
Just an FYI for anyone 'worried' about legality... Every single radio in the Baofeng UV family is illegal to own without a license.
*transmit on
They're all capable of transmitting on restricted frequencies and over 1 watt
wattage isnt an issue for the free max 0.5 watt walkie talkie frequencys . Goverment seals are
so illegal to transmit or own?
Transmit.
Not that anyone will notice on the lpd 433 or pmr446 bands (walkie talkie freqency) though. Especially if you use low power mode. Itll be indistinguishable
is that the good shit
That looks to be the same as the 20$ uv-5r. Dont buy its a ripoff
Well it supports digital i guess
If you absolutly insist on dmr buy ive read good stuff about this version https://www.radioddity.com/products/radioddity-x-baofeng-rd-5r-dmr-ham-amateur-two-way-radio
Keep in mind that these digital radioes are not encrypted as you might believe
If you want that the only way, and very illegal at that would be to either shell out 1000$ for a commercial one or connect your 20$ uv-5r to your android phone and send encrypted pgp messages over it. Dont do that until after the apocalypse though
>TL;DR; for everyone else. Buy ubitx (starting at 100$) for international com. Buy baofeng 860 (22$) + nagoya 771 antenna (2$) for 10-100km range.
you will not get 10km range on a poochang with a nagoya 771
not to mention the baofungus are analog radios, not digital
I did 1.5 miles on open ground
At that range it was *rough*
@bear market Liar. I listen in on my local repeater which is behind a hill/forest and 22km away. Readable with practically no difficulty
Readable, maybe. Sure. But transmittable?
@qiwinom I can rx shortwave from across the world on a 20 dollar chink radio from Amazon, but do you know what kind of system it takes to transmit even across the country?
@UncleDrMrBaby I dont recall trying that or if it worked from behind the hill. But Line of sight will always work. If there is no obstruction between you you can reach it, always - even with low power. Thats why you can reliable communicate with the ISS with your baofeng and the proper antenna. In fact you are advised to use the low power setting for that
the key is the proper antenna and also proper weather conditions
because radio is more sensitive to particulates than visible light
I haven't been into radios (outside CB) since middle school. Soldered my own shortwave receiver kit together, made a 300ft antenna on the roof and listened away
I'm getting back into it now
I have legit no experience in any of this stuff, but i feel its important and i need to learn it
everyone whos a prepper should be a ham radio operator
not only is does it give you a way to practice a very important skill, but theres a ton of preppers on ham radio and you could network with them locally
we need some amatuer radio operator nutjob to open up an apocalypse radio on the AM shortwaves
160m is full of preppers and crazy people
Oh frick I'm a wanna be "prepper" and I might not be crazy but I've been called a paranoid asshole, unfortunately I'm also poor and shit so....
I only have 2 and 6 m <:pinkwojak:673420781182779442> <:pinkwojak:673420781182779442>
Fuck I should have take my General already
I went to channel 160 and there ain't shit
I think I'm the only one prepped for the boog in my vicinity
I keep finding channels where I get full bars and it's just white noise
rolled right back around and none of my channels are populated but the NOAA one
smh
at least on uhf
what you think 160m means?
Is it 160 meter?
I'm big brainlet on the ham and getting a license means going out to cironaland
yeah
the large wavelength bands are classified under "high frequency"
Its the length of one full oscilation
1hz is one light year
2hz is half a light year
and so forth
Wifi is 12.5cm
@Reveretneon no, the high frequency is lower wavelength
You're
Right
I was thinking of 160cm
Recommend ant for Beofeng ur5v? Keep seeing Nagoya 771 but thereโs a lot of random name 771 fakery on eBay and Amazon
UV-5r no longer fool proof recommendation due to price doubling recently in the aftermath of coronavirus
and that guide is missleading
d
got mine 2 years back, 3 with pgm cable, extended battery packs and PTT with earpiece / mic boom (total airsoft larp but whatever) - still has the stock antenna on.
actually its this one
