Im not an atheist so it would be hard to infer there way of thinking

But a good guess is they use substitutes like there work or profession to get meaning from

I am one, and through conversations with my religious friends I've come to understand a bit better why Christians think that Atheism is inherently nihilistic

Without God there is nothing, no meaning, no purpose, no direction in life

If they know it or not, they substitutes things of the world where God should be

So they impose that meaning that they internalize upon atheists and think that atheists work within that framework

Therefore to them atheism is nihilistic

I don't think all atheist are nihilistic tho, that hasn't really crossed my mind if they are

I think it depends on how they came to atheism. The ones lashing out against their religious upbringings are probably moreso and the ones who are naturally atheistic (more like me) are not as much. Overall percentage-wise atheists are probably slightly more nihilistic than Christians.

Christians can also be pulled in by doubt (sin, temptation, whatever) which can lead to existential crisis
