Ill summarize the summary to make it quick. 1) This is a matter of Natl. security. Almost all of our steel and aluminum used in military grade production is sourced from outside the states, mostly from China. Since we have basically accpeted that us and China may eventually go to war, that is simply an unacceptable failure of national logistics. 2) Our current trade deficit with China is hundreds of billions of dollars. While cheap Chinese steel and other goods frees up money to be spent in other areas as you said, it also allows china to slowly own more and more of our country. We have to pay for those cheap goods with currency, debt, or physical assets (land, material, american companies). As time goes on, this ridiculous deficit will mean China will own more and more of America. Additionally, since they get paid in American Dollars, they stockpile those dollars to manipulate exchange rates at opportune moments. This means that their currency will always be devalued. Devalued currency means cheaper exports, which means we are paying them to keep the deficit massive. Additionally, Chinese exports give them access to billions in American debt. With the looming debt crisis becoming worse and worse, China is accelerating the debt crisis here in America and they know it.

Additionally, if you care about the destruction of the welfare state because of what its done to our society, then you dont want a trade deficit with China. The trade deficit gives us access to nearly unlimited foreign dollars in the form of debt. The debt crisis entirely exists because America is cashing in on all the "free money" that we get from being an import nation. In reality its the American people who are taking on debt, but we dont even control the people who control the people who turn the levers on our debt. Look at what has happened to Greece Spain and Italy, access to Daddy Germany's checkbook has caused their states to bloat and suffocate their economies. Their Debt to GDP is the economic equivalent to torture porn. America is on a much larger scale, but that is where we are headed. If we didn't have as much access to all this free money. Then we would either have to raise revenues, or cut spending. At the current moment, the reason even the biggest spending hawks in congress can't really cut spending is because of the allure of all of that free money. Look at the government shutdown. We all just caved to borrow trillions of dollars because we can. Cheap debt is the crack cocaine of the developed world and its time to either get sober or get pulled over.

At the end of the day I hope it works out, with the tight labor market steel producers are having to pay higher wages for workers, and I just hope they're generous enough to start paying more for steel too
