When I was little (like five or so), my aunt was married to an abusive guy (the father of her three kids), and CPS got called a bunch and tried taking them away from her, even though she was just trying to keep them safe from her husband. Eventually it all got sorted once my grandparents assumed temporary custody of my cousins and they proved to CPS that my aunt was the problem, but I think it took like three years for them to stop checking up on her once she finally got divorced.
