I used to watch anime all the time, but it has been a year or two before I actually watched one.

I get tired of people talking about anime as if it's some glorious thing. It's just a crazy word for "Japanese animation." It's not automatically better just because you don't translate the name. Japan values animated entertainment more than live action so they have more animated shows meant for wider audiences. Versus American animation, which focuses more so on being mindless comedies due to strict control and meddling by the few animation networks like Nick, Disney, and Cartoon Network.
Since Japan doesn't do that, and they have more animated shows than live action, it's more likely that you'll find something you'll like since it's not limited to slapstick comedy targeted to children like it is here. But that doesn't change that just like TV anywhere, most of the shows produced are going to be terrible.
