What do you guys think about this: https://www.ubnt.com/

2017-09-21 02:14:25 UTC

From what I understand you can use this to build a private wireless internet?

2017-09-21 02:14:51 UTC

would be interesting to build something like this for our settlement and communicate out of reach from prying eyes

2017-09-21 02:15:25 UTC

I have something similar at my house. It's essentially an infinitely expandable network.

2017-09-21 02:16:02 UTC

With modules that can go all over extending your wifi without duplicating the ssid.

2017-09-21 02:16:24 UTC

It's handy, but expensive.

2017-09-21 02:16:50 UTC

what do you use it for if you dont mind me asking

2017-09-21 02:17:42 UTC

Well, the primary point of it is range extension, I have a fairly long house, even the most expensive routers wont cover it.

2017-09-21 02:17:49 UTC

*consumer routers

2017-09-21 02:18:29 UTC

But theres securuty and convenience reasons as well.

2017-09-21 02:18:34 UTC

*security

2017-09-21 02:19:25 UTC

They have a unified interface, which allows for control of the network as a whole, rather than having to set up individual access points.

2017-09-21 02:19:36 UTC

Which is a pain.

2017-09-21 02:19:51 UTC

can it really extend 15km out like it claims?

2017-09-21 02:20:26 UTC

They have finely granulated permissions and policy controls as well, much moreso than the average home router.

2017-09-21 02:20:35 UTC

With enough modules, sure.

2017-09-21 02:21:05 UTC

Or with high powered directional transmitters and recievers.

2017-09-21 02:21:53 UTC

do you think this could come in handy in a settlement, for members to communicate securely?

2017-09-21 02:22:26 UTC

As long as it was kept isolated from the web, otherwise it isn't 100% secure.

2017-09-21 02:22:43 UTC

And most any wifi has vulnerabilities.

2017-09-21 02:23:00 UTC

If someone has the encryption keys and is in range.

2017-09-21 02:24:13 UTC

Wifi is generally not your best option if security is your main priority.

2017-09-21 02:24:42 UTC

but being in range is already a major obstacle no?

2017-09-21 02:24:54 UTC

plus you would need to know it even exists

2017-09-21 02:25:12 UTC

Depends on where you are I suppose.

2017-09-21 02:26:06 UTC

To hack a wifi network, yes you have to be physically in range, so if you can keep outsiders far enough away, it would be ok.

2017-09-21 02:26:21 UTC

with things like discord some unwanted (((person))) can stumble in and see everything were talking about, but with a private network they have to go to some serious lengths

2017-09-21 02:26:26 UTC

I'm not sure I would bet on that.

2017-09-21 02:26:54 UTC

It's a different thing though.

2017-09-21 02:27:07 UTC

In Discord we are connected to users all over the world.

2017-09-21 02:27:18 UTC

yea im sure if the FBI really wants to know what youre up to i dont think anything can stop them, but if you give them no reason to look, will anyone know?

2017-09-21 02:27:23 UTC

In that case you have no choice but to use the public internet.

2017-09-21 02:27:32 UTC

yeah

2017-09-21 02:28:25 UTC

WHo knows man, there's no telling what the NSA is listening to and archiving.

2017-09-21 02:28:33 UTC

And all the other government spooks.

2017-09-21 02:31:14 UTC

At this point I wouldn't be suprised if they roamed the countrysides looking for rogue networks to get into and spy on.

Looking to get my first gun, what do you guys reccomend? Pistol, shotgun, etc? Also, a specific model if you have one in mind. Thinking of going with a shotgun

2017-10-03 03:19:13 UTC

whats your primary purpose, and do you live a cucked state or no

2017-10-03 03:20:22 UTC

if you want a voodoo totem that lives under your bed and makes you feel safe a shotgun is fine

2017-10-03 03:20:54 UTC

if you want to do anything fun with it, skip the shotgun

2017-10-03 03:21:49 UTC

theres definitely the argument that you can hunt with the shotgun, and i dove hunt with one every year, but my bird gun would be hilariously shit at home defense

2017-10-03 03:25:07 UTC

theres the edge case of 3 gun competition, but 3 gun means you're shopping for all 3, and id still put the shotgun second or last

2017-10-03 03:26:34 UTC

if you live in a must issue state or a state that doesnt make you jump through hoops for shall issue ccw, get a pistol first imho

2017-10-03 03:26:55 UTC

(also get your permit and carry it)

2017-10-03 03:26:58 UTC

(always carry it)

2017-10-03 03:27:37 UTC

unfortunately i dont think theres a real answer to 'da bes pistol' as it comes down to handfeel and comfort

2017-10-03 03:28:25 UTC

best entry level 556 is stupid easy right now, get an m&p sport 2, they're basically giving them away

2017-10-03 03:30:17 UTC

i daily carry a glock 19, but your favorite pistol is like your favorite anime; it fucking sucks

2017-10-03 03:31:02 UTC

the muh mechanical safety vs muh no mechanical safety debate rages eternal

2017-10-03 03:32:23 UTC

my xmas present to myself is going to be a chiappa rhino and a boot holster

2017-10-03 03:32:48 UTC

shot my buddy's at the range this summer and fell in love

2017-10-03 03:33:45 UTC

and if you do want a home defense shotgun, get a remington 870 home defense, no sense in reinventing the wheel for your first go boom

2017-10-03 04:59:04 UTC

Thanks for the info. Live in Indiana so gun laws almost non existent. It would just be for home defense (maybe a little range shooting but defense is first priority). Will look at some pistols, think i will go with a good ol boom stick for the first one and then go for a pistol (cant really carry since mostly walking around university)

2017-10-03 05:00:24 UTC

np, i still recommend a pistol over a shotgun for home defense, like any tool, you gotta practice to be good with it, and you arent going to be going to indoor ranges and shooting your defense length shotgun

2017-10-03 05:01:38 UTC

best thing there is go to cabelas or bass pro or whatever you have up there on a weekday and talk with the guy at the gun counter

2017-10-03 05:02:17 UTC

he'll let you handle guns so you can get an idea for what is comfortable in your hands

2017-10-03 05:04:02 UTC

and i mean a shotgun isnt some terrible bad thing to not buy, its just really easy to go to an indoor range and shoot your pistol, its a giant pain in most places to be able to run a box of shells through your scattergun

2017-10-03 05:05:04 UTC

its like working out, if you have to drive an hour to your gym, how often are you going to make excuses not to go

2017-10-04 02:09:26 UTC

This could be very useful for a group of people

2017-10-08 03:19:34 UTC

they're fun guns to shoot, though i never shot a FA one

2017-10-08 03:19:45 UTC

definitely not shtf guns though, they're fiddly

2017-10-08 03:21:28 UTC

yeah its just really cool

2017-10-08 03:21:35 UTC

what do you think the ideal shtf gun is?

2017-10-08 03:21:58 UTC

depends on the manner of shtf, like nork nukes or what

2017-10-08 03:22:06 UTC

I vote shotgun

2017-10-08 03:22:38 UTC

remington 870

2017-10-08 03:22:42 UTC

if i have to go live in the woods again forever, probably a tried and true AK

2017-10-08 03:22:59 UTC

less finnicky in dirty environs

2017-10-08 03:23:19 UTC

anything else, my ar

2017-10-08 03:23:44 UTC

maybe an sks or nugget

2017-10-08 03:24:13 UTC

i bought a cute little carbine a while back that takes my pistol mags, kel-tec sub2000, i like it as a backpack gun, it folds up

2017-10-08 03:25:01 UTC

i wouldnt want to hunt with it, for numerous reasons, but its sweet for larping at the range

2017-10-08 03:25:26 UTC

it could be a good urban minority deterrent

2017-10-08 03:25:58 UTC

this is?

2017-10-08 03:26:05 UTC

yeah thats it

2017-10-08 03:26:10 UTC

im watchig that right now haha

2017-10-08 03:26:53 UTC

"let's see if we can wake up mr. trayvon heh heh heh"

2017-10-08 03:29:26 UTC

(it wont shoot at a 90 degree angle ofc)

2017-10-08 03:30:16 UTC

its super light and takes my glock mags, of which i have basically an infinite number

Don't-even-own-a-gun 2 cents here:
I would get an AK- variant. Preferably Finnish or Israeli (yeah I know) because that's the gun I have been trained with in the army (7.62x39). If I were to go for a bigger gun I'd chose a british .303 though. The rapid shooting of the Enfield is pretty amazing in my opinion, unfortunately there's almost no surpluss ammo left.

2017-10-09 22:19:04 UTC

you can literally buy an american made, billet milled receiver akm made by century for under a grand

2017-10-09 22:19:54 UTC

there arent any 'cheap ak vars' anymore, you'll pay 5-600 for a wasr 10 or some bulg variant

2017-10-09 22:21:10 UTC

the comedy option is to buy blanks, a press, and the dies to make your own stamped receivers, telling yourself that in the long run you'll save money cause you want to make like 10 aks

2017-10-09 22:21:50 UTC

then you realize how shit hard it is to make a gun that works in your garage and you end up with a $2000 ak that shoots like crap

2017-10-09 22:23:59 UTC

theres zero reason for any person located in the USA and over tha age of 18 to not go to your local dicks/cabelas and buy a M&P Sport II today, right now

2017-10-09 22:25:21 UTC

literally baby's first battle rifle

2017-10-10 18:45:33 UTC

I heard Century AKs are trash, at least that seems to be the consenus on /k/

2017-10-10 23:40:49 UTC

its an old meme

2017-10-10 23:41:22 UTC

when they first started importing/rebuilding polish/bulg aks for the us market, they had serious build quality issues

2017-10-10 23:42:30 UTC

that said i super dont recommend buying an old used one lol

2017-10-10 23:43:30 UTC

granted, of the ancient old ones out there, the chi-com mak90s are the cream of the crop

2017-10-17 20:40:26 UTC

What are your thoughts on the M14, mini 14 and mini 30?

2017-10-17 20:42:37 UTC

the mini 14 is a classic

2017-10-17 20:43:09 UTC

the m14 is overwrought and a little scary to build yourself

2017-10-17 20:44:23 UTC

like, the m1a's that springfield has been putting out recently are awesome

2017-10-17 20:44:50 UTC

but i dont want that to be the gun i have to service alone if the shtf

2017-10-17 20:45:18 UTC

never handled a mini 30

2017-10-17 20:47:08 UTC

if i want to throw 308 far, id just as soon set up a ar pattern in 308 with a heavy barrel

2017-10-17 20:47:52 UTC

granted thats a super edge case scenario where you're engaging armor at range

2017-10-17 20:48:54 UTC

thats one of the firearms rabbit holes, stopping power/range

2017-10-17 20:50:05 UTC

you start with a simple and perfectly fine ar pattern in 556, and someone youve never met on a hindu basketweaving forum tells you that 556 is the 9mm of rifle rounds and muslim terrorists have basically built up an immunity to it, and its off to the races

2017-10-17 20:50:52 UTC

you wake up from a fevered haze and you've bought 10k rounds of 300 blackout

2017-10-17 20:51:50 UTC

(300blk is super fun to shoot out of an ar pattern tho)

2017-10-17 20:52:23 UTC

recoil profile is radically different from 556 and 762

2017-10-17 20:58:01 UTC

Ever shot 5.56 or 7.62x39 through bushes or branches?

2017-10-17 21:00:14 UTC

sure, anything solid is going to modify a fast projectile's path

2017-10-17 21:00:33 UTC

its the same with even larger rounds, i hunt with a 30.06

2017-10-17 21:01:41 UTC

please dont misunderstand my lack of preference on the m14, its not the round, the the fiddly nature of the receiver action

2017-10-17 21:02:22 UTC

i do believe that folks get super caught up in caliber dick-waiving, but to each his own there

2017-10-17 21:02:32 UTC

From my experience in the Finnish army, we got to play around with the 556 and it seemed like we had to put two or three rounds more to get our metal targets to fall down, compared to the 762 which usually made the metal targets fall on the first shot (if you hit of course). This was even more noticable when the targets were behind bushes or any sort of object.

2017-10-17 21:03:03 UTC

oh, 7.62 is a demonstrably heavier round for sure

2017-10-17 21:04:31 UTC

I don't have formal military training, so take my shit with a grain of salt in regards to anything human conflict related

2017-10-17 21:04:44 UTC

im just a good old boy from alabama who owns a bunch of them there guns

2017-10-17 21:05:16 UTC

I believe this is one of the main reason why Finland is sticking to the ''outdated'' 7.62x39. We hardly shot at ranges further than 150m and even then there were usually brushes and shit in the way of our targets.

2017-10-17 21:05:36 UTC

haha, we didn't shoot much live ammo though, so I don't have much experience in that way.

2017-10-17 21:05:42 UTC

7.62 is a fine round

2017-10-17 21:06:03 UTC

i have an akm, its fun to shoot, and cheaper to shoot than my ARs

2017-10-17 21:12:52 UTC

I guess I've shot less than 300 live rounds

2017-10-17 21:14:15 UTC

yeah thats a range trip for me, but then again, i live in the US, and in one of the biggest gun culture bits of it

2017-10-19 02:01:04 UTC

2017-10-19 19:32:20 UTC

2017-10-19 20:00:37 UTC

I thought I'd share a webstore that sells quality stuff for a good price and fair shipping, even all the way to the USA.
I own multiple of their products, I've never been dissapointed with any of their products and their product descriptions are pretty funny some times.

Anyone know what to do when the oil drain bolt wont budge

2017-10-22 22:58:33 UTC

are you on a car

2017-10-22 22:58:50 UTC

Wrench wont take it off, ive tried hitting the wrench with a hammer, using a carjack to try prop it to move iy just lifts the car

2017-10-22 22:58:53 UTC

Yea a car

2017-10-22 22:59:27 UTC

you have penetrating lubricant and heat available ..did you warm the car before trying to drain the oil

2017-10-22 22:59:36 UTC

I warmed it

2017-10-22 22:59:42 UTC

Didnt lube it or anything

2017-10-22 22:59:56 UTC

yeah i never had one stick im worried its crossthreaded

2017-10-22 23:00:05 UTC

if so then fuggg

2017-10-22 23:00:18 UTC

I beat the fuck out of it and it wont turn

2017-10-22 23:00:22 UTC

๐Ÿ˜ก

2017-10-22 23:00:23 UTC

i beleive you lol

2017-10-22 23:00:49 UTC

you dont have pb blaster or liquid wrench i guess

2017-10-22 23:01:20 UTC

Not on me

2017-10-22 23:01:25 UTC

I could get some

2017-10-22 23:01:45 UTC

yeah it still might not work but its a cheap try you just gotta make a trip

2017-10-22 23:02:46 UTC

if you are going to an auto parts store you might want to see if they have a new drain plug so you dont put the same one back in

2017-10-22 23:03:58 UTC

Yea, ill try use the lube next time and hammer it off again

2017-10-22 23:04:28 UTC

let the lube do the work you dont want to ruin the oilpan

2017-10-22 23:06:26 UTC

I blame the jews for this

2017-10-22 23:08:08 UTC

one probably picked that bolt since it saved a penny...if only we could keep them busy chasing pennies some other way...we will never find an answer

2017-10-23 08:31:56 UTC

@chris Try hitting the bolt right on the middle with the hammer.

2017-10-23 08:32:13 UTC

Unless it's an aluminum engine.

2017-10-23 08:32:47 UTC

Then you're probably screwed

2017-10-23 08:32:57 UTC

(Pun intended)

2017-10-23 17:58:41 UTC

go buy a new plug bolt, then drill the old one out
