2018-07-14 20:54:19 UTC

I was going to guess SEA

2018-07-14 20:54:22 UTC

i fukkin love filipino weapons ngl

2018-07-14 20:54:25 UTC

that or africa

2018-07-14 20:54:30 UTC

Yeah they have some really unique ones

2018-07-14 20:54:58 UTC

this is now pre-firearms chat

2018-07-14 20:54:59 UTC

Theres quite the variety in melee weapons in SEA for some reason

2018-07-14 20:55:30 UTC

Some areas just seemed to experiment more. Like india for example

2018-07-14 20:55:42 UTC

well there''s a pretty big variety just about everywhere really

2018-07-14 20:55:57 UTC

except the japs, who could only ever figure out 2 melee weapon designs

2018-07-14 20:56:12 UTC

I mean its them making the most out of their meagre iron deposits

2018-07-14 20:56:22 UTC

Hey, they had katanas, big katanas, small katanas, katanas on sticks... the list could go on!

2018-07-14 20:56:23 UTC

Like, bladed, and spears?

2018-07-14 20:56:31 UTC

That was it.

2018-07-14 20:57:30 UTC

i really dislike japanese melee weapons, to the surprise of everyone i've ever met

2018-07-14 20:58:08 UTC

They definitely have a certain elegance to them, but aside from gimmick weapons like kusarigama they really don't have much variety

2018-07-14 20:58:11 UTC

I think they are overrated. But in their context, it was the best they could do

2018-07-14 20:58:22 UTC

And I think they did a good job at that

2018-07-14 20:58:25 UTC

They Ainu people had some interesting sword designs

2018-07-14 20:58:40 UTC

yeah i'll give them that the design of the katana was effective for the materials they had

2018-07-14 20:58:45 UTC

I think its reflective of their entire culture. Low metal deposits and quality meant having to make the most out of little.

2018-07-14 20:58:59 UTC

Isolated nation, meant that they could count on almost everyone using the same designs.

2018-07-14 20:59:05 UTC

Yeah, they didn't have much as far as resources go, but I think it's mainly their isolationism and traditionalism that led to their stagnant designs

2018-07-14 20:59:13 UTC

So it became a skill competition, not a tech one

2018-07-14 20:59:26 UTC

and a 'why fix what isn't broke' situation

2018-07-14 20:59:59 UTC

It's very weird that shields weren't ever really used by the lesser armored troops though

2018-07-14 21:00:19 UTC

Unless you go back to pre-nippon 'japan'

2018-07-14 21:00:36 UTC

shields were weirdly unpopular in asia

2018-07-14 21:00:39 UTC

Thats what their armor was for. The only thing they needed shields were against archers.

2018-07-14 21:00:45 UTC

compared to europe at least

2018-07-14 21:01:06 UTC

Also the tsuba fucking sucks for hand protection. A simple crossguard adds so much more hand protection than you'd expect

2018-07-14 21:01:06 UTC

But since, when it came to melee, you want the greater advantage when it comes to weapon handling.

2018-07-14 21:01:22 UTC

goddamn I fucking love ebay

2018-07-14 21:01:23 UTC

Shields kinda interfered with taht

2018-07-14 21:01:25 UTC

katanas being 2 handed weapons kinda makes using a shield difficult tho

2018-07-14 21:01:40 UTC

Yeah, but most would be using Yari

2018-07-14 21:01:43 UTC

You need 2 hands to cut with it properly

2018-07-14 21:01:48 UTC

Not everyone was a Samurai with heavy armor

2018-07-14 21:01:54 UTC

yeah but JDM you have to consider the possibility that you may get a plastic toy instead

2018-07-14 21:02:07 UTC

Its a damn expensive plastic toy

2018-07-14 21:02:24 UTC

not when the seller feed back is 40K +

2018-07-14 21:02:27 UTC

5 star

2018-07-14 21:02:45 UTC

2018-07-14 21:03:47 UTC

Damn it, and Im living in backwards SEA drooling over the stuff Americans can do.

2018-07-14 21:03:47 UTC

even then, paypal buyer protection is pretty insane

2018-07-14 21:10:54 UTC

2018-07-14 23:22:42 UTC

2018-07-14 23:22:48 UTC

time to clean up for a pic

2018-07-14 23:26:46 UTC

Guns, what guns? What are these melei guns you speak of?

2018-07-14 23:27:43 UTC

Guns are the great equalizer, which basically means communism. Swords are where it's at :^)

2018-07-14 23:34:17 UTC

But for real guns did a lot for bringing equality to the world. Before guns power was controlled by the wealthy, because armor was so damn expensive+effective. Only the rich could afford it, and afford to arm troops with it. After guns became a viable option even a peasant could be a threat to the knightly class.

2018-07-15 00:24:54 UTC

I need a bunch of 10/30's

2018-07-15 05:08:50 UTC

nope

2018-07-15 05:09:23 UTC

I'm not really a .22lr fan

2018-07-15 05:09:40 UTC

I think it's good for three things

2018-07-15 05:09:51 UTC

1) Training people who have no idea wtf a gun is or how it works

2018-07-15 05:10:09 UTC

2) Handgun practice, reproduction models in 22lr are EXCELLENT for this purpose

2018-07-15 05:10:56 UTC

3) 100-250 yard target shooting, especially in variable wind conditions

2018-07-15 05:11:10 UTC

ideally with a bolt action but it honestly doesn't matter

2018-07-15 05:11:31 UTC

I only have a savage FVSR

2018-07-15 05:11:34 UTC

the rest are gone

2018-07-15 05:18:15 UTC

it's pretty cheap to shoot I just don't get why anyone would

2018-07-15 05:18:30 UTC

Maybe chase after a 9mm carbine

2018-07-15 05:21:30 UTC

Don't get me wrong, I just think it'd be a blast to inexpensively shoot with a fifty round plinker

2018-07-15 12:05:37 UTC

Anyone got news on the Railgun that i think MIT or DARPA is working on?

2018-07-15 21:35:51 UTC

Shelved last I heard, but they aren't scrapping it.

2018-07-15 22:21:54 UTC

I mean, last I heard its still too heavy for infantry use. Still probably a cheaper replacement for dealing with missiles or mortar fire.

2018-07-15 22:24:28 UTC

it won't be too heavy in microgravity, which means the SPACE FORCE WILL HAVE RAILGUNS
