So whenever you see something called Art that is clearly shit, that makes you say "Oh shut the fuck up" Just remember: It's tax evasion.

2018-08-19 19:38:32 UTC

art means produced with conscious artistry

2018-08-19 19:38:37 UTC

And unlike that redefinition it holds no utility

2018-08-19 19:38:38 UTC

It's LEGAL tax evasion.

2018-08-19 19:38:41 UTC

So don't be as mad. lol

2018-08-19 19:38:56 UTC

you all are non creative types so i am not surprised that you are authoritarian on this subject

2018-08-19 19:39:01 UTC

haha

2018-08-19 19:39:04 UTC

heh

2018-08-19 19:39:09 UTC

How authoritarian

2018-08-19 19:39:12 UTC

wow i love modern art now

2018-08-19 19:39:15 UTC

i am partly trolling

2018-08-19 19:39:15 UTC

To tell me I'm not a creative type

2018-08-19 19:39:17 UTC

but partly not

2018-08-19 19:39:21 UTC

i'm a game developer, i create every day,

I still don't call myself an artist ๐Ÿ˜›

2018-08-19 19:39:42 UTC

antifa doesn't call themselves authoritarians

2018-08-19 19:39:44 UTC

i would label game development as an art but i dont know what that makes you mad, lol

2018-08-19 19:40:08 UTC

It doesn't, you got upset that i said not everything can just be slapped "art" on and it magically becomes art

2018-08-19 19:40:11 UTC

ah i gotta go for a minute but nice discussion with you chaps

2018-08-19 19:40:29 UTC

alrighty, peace bud

2018-08-19 19:40:34 UTC

๐Ÿ‘Œ

2018-08-19 19:40:51 UTC

The one that always irks me is the game one

2018-08-19 19:40:56 UTC

What is or isn't a video game

2018-08-19 19:41:15 UTC

it could be an audio game

2018-08-19 19:41:19 UTC

Because I've not heard a definition that includes walking sims and doesn't include basically all entertainment software

2018-08-19 19:41:29 UTC

If it has an interactive game element displayed visually in it its a video game

2018-08-19 19:41:41 UTC

my mouse pointer is a video game

2018-08-19 19:41:41 UTC

Game element is the key

2018-08-19 19:41:48 UTC

It has to be a game

2018-08-19 19:42:02 UTC

It can't be "hold forward until the end"

2018-08-19 19:42:07 UTC

Game element is the key,

Because if its just "a story" in visualisation

A pdf of a book is "a game" ๐Ÿ˜›

2018-08-19 19:42:31 UTC

I've heard people say it's just any software you use for entertainment

2018-08-19 19:42:32 UTC

scrolling down to read the next page is interaction, and its graphically visualised

But theres no game element to it

2018-08-19 19:42:41 UTC

@Atkins If you read between the lines in the Guardian article. Druckman and Kaplan are representatives of major studios. Most of the remainder appear to be university faculty, on galleries or very small studios. It's like movies. These are the guys who make those really awful hyper-politicized indie movies no one watches and teaches the next generation of movie makers what to put in their films (and then hand out the awards)

2018-08-19 19:42:43 UTC

So I asked them how they'd rate GIMP as a game

2018-08-19 19:42:53 UTC

i dont think second life is a video game

2018-08-19 19:43:05 UTC

It isnt

2018-08-19 19:43:14 UTC

There's no game element to it as a whole

2018-08-19 19:43:19 UTC

It's highly likely the people are awarding themselves monies out of public treasuries.

2018-08-19 19:43:24 UTC

Which isn't to say there aren't games in second life

2018-08-19 19:43:30 UTC

Its a game if it has a game element in it,

Watching a movie on your pc is entertainment, but it doesn't make my media player a video game

2018-08-19 19:43:51 UTC

๐Ÿ‘Œ

2018-08-19 19:44:08 UTC

Walking simulators are basically just interactive novels,

You can decide how fast it goes etc and listen to a story

2018-08-19 19:44:23 UTC

hmm

2018-08-19 19:44:26 UTC

Yup

2018-08-19 19:44:40 UTC

ok

2018-08-19 19:44:40 UTC

And it's not insulting for them to not be games. It's better if they're separated

2018-08-19 19:44:48 UTC

People should know what they're getting into

2018-08-19 19:45:04 UTC

well theres also things known as "serious games"

Thats basically education in gaming form

2018-08-19 19:45:28 UTC

Edutainment

2018-08-19 19:45:28 UTC

what a silly term

2018-08-19 19:45:43 UTC

"education" in the way that Uni indoctrination is "education"

2018-08-19 19:45:54 UTC

Or Chinese political education.

2018-08-19 19:45:55 UTC

education doesnt need to be serious

2018-08-19 19:45:57 UTC

There are decent educational games

2018-08-19 19:46:14 UTC

nah, Serious Games are stuff like for example flight simulators for pilots etc

2018-08-19 19:46:16 UTC

But those usually get called "educational" instead.

2018-08-19 19:46:27 UTC

thats even more silly

2018-08-19 19:46:33 UTC

I always thought those were called "simulators" or "trainers"

2018-08-19 19:46:38 UTC

yeah

2018-08-19 19:46:49 UTC

well

2018-08-19 19:46:52 UTC

This "serious games" movement appears to be more about being "artistic" in the style of Brecht or something.

2018-08-19 19:46:57 UTC

Serious games are meant to be realistic

2018-08-19 19:47:05 UTC

Utilizing gaming to advance political causes.

2018-08-19 19:47:07 UTC

Surgeon simulator is not a good representative of real life surgery ๐Ÿ˜„

2018-08-19 19:47:20 UTC

No but faux sims aren't sims

2018-08-19 19:47:20 UTC

lol

2018-08-19 19:47:20 UTC

I don't think it pretends to be.

2018-08-19 19:47:24 UTC

They're just memegames

2018-08-19 19:47:24 UTC

well exactly

2018-08-19 19:47:34 UTC

A better simulator would be DiRT 3

2018-08-19 19:47:38 UTC

so Surgeon Simulator would not be qualified as a "Serious Game"

2018-08-19 19:47:43 UTC

Even though it doesn't have "simulator" in it's name.

2018-08-19 19:47:50 UTC

or Goat simulator ๐Ÿ˜›

2018-08-19 19:47:50 UTC

Dirt is still simcade isn't it?

2018-08-19 19:48:11 UTC

Bascially. They've actually published papers on simulating dirty-tire interactions to try and properly emulate the physics.

2018-08-19 19:48:29 UTC

But the game is also designed to still be played casually.

2018-08-19 19:48:41 UTC

I was thinking stuff like full on sim racers, or DCS

2018-08-19 19:49:55 UTC

"Serious Games" is probably closer to Papers Please. But without considering "both sides"

2018-08-19 19:49:59 UTC

And the people who bought spintires for mud physics

2018-08-19 19:50:18 UTC

Microsoft Flight Simulator?

2018-08-19 19:50:28 UTC

yes like Flight Simulator

2018-08-19 19:50:37 UTC

ive seen people play that, i would not call that serious at all

2018-08-19 19:50:45 UTC

https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/463054787336732683/480825974687006730/2a71b3a12a5000076210f0450b38e35c.png

2018-08-19 19:51:03 UTC

@NativeInterface It's pretty serious. I've played it and gotten bored on the actual flight.

2018-08-19 19:51:10 UTC

well the idea behind serious games is that they're about learning / training, and not as much about adding a fun-twist to it

2018-08-19 19:51:12 UTC

see airforceproud95

2018-08-19 19:51:17 UTC

Once you get steady level and just sit for several hours...

2018-08-19 19:51:27 UTC

There's a place around here that advertises actual flying lessons and I'm kinda tempted

2018-08-19 19:51:37 UTC

@Dr.Wol not the "serious games" as described in the Guardian article.

2018-08-19 19:51:50 UTC

@Beemann how much?

2018-08-19 19:51:59 UTC

Haven't checked yet

2018-08-19 19:52:35 UTC

serious is just a description of how uptight the users are

2018-08-19 19:52:58 UTC

Looks like its about 2-300 depending on the craft

2018-08-19 19:53:22 UTC

i played this game

i used to allah akbar at the arcade

2018-08-19 19:54:05 UTC

looks ultra serious

2018-08-19 19:54:16 UTC

pretty cool game tbh

2018-08-19 19:55:16 UTC

daium the seriousness is out of control!
