If the US had a draft they could do something where everyone gets drafted but you only go into combat if you sign up for it. Everyone else is logistics and other services. There are probably more than enough people who would volunteer for combat that it wouldn’t need to be mandatory.

I don't think a draft would be politically viable unless there was an actual defensive war. Vietnam turned a lot of people againt the draft in principle.
Most draftees would be working on American soil.
Overseas people would probably be the ones volunteering for it.
I don't disagree. I just don't see it as something that would get politicans thrown out of office for supporting it.

The draft is/should only be viable if mainland USA is under direct danger of attacks. Draftees will fill the backline and logistics portion, while volunteers will do the actual frontline duty
