ya but it was still a great popcorn movie of the 90s

2018-09-18 01:20:42 UTC

The point is shooting stuff! And explosions!

2018-09-18 01:20:44 UTC

if not one of the best of them

2018-09-18 01:20:46 UTC

Was I spot on re: the subject of the BioShock vid? Because that's where I'd go with it

2018-09-18 01:21:33 UTC

That's the video if you want to judge for yourself.

2018-09-18 01:21:46 UTC

On data, will check when I get home

2018-09-18 01:22:04 UTC

But I think he was on Rand's side. Gave some good points on where Ryan went wrong.

2018-09-18 01:22:29 UTC

Tbh BioShock is one of those games I feel only succeeded to the extent that it did because of when it came out

2018-09-18 01:22:44 UTC

Oh I would approach it from an authorial standpoint entirely

2018-09-18 01:23:04 UTC

so did you make the video you linked beeman?

2018-09-18 01:23:07 UTC

Though from the sounds of things parts of it were done against Levine's original vision, so I can't fault him too much

2018-09-18 01:23:14 UTC

Hm?

2018-09-18 01:23:21 UTC

I don't think I've linked any of my videos

2018-09-18 01:23:26 UTC

They're all raw gameplay

2018-09-18 01:23:42 UTC

my bad, i thought you had linked the first video

2018-09-18 01:23:48 UTC

Ah

2018-09-18 01:24:01 UTC

oh that was everyone

2018-09-18 01:25:59 UTC

But yeah the main issue with BioShock is that there's no cause that leads to the effect the player runs into

2018-09-18 01:26:36 UTC

It's just the usual "no goberment = one dude will murder everyone in the area and they'll be unable to stop him because he has one gun" shit

2018-09-18 01:27:02 UTC

the rambo effect

2018-09-18 01:27:41 UTC

You're just talking about the gameplay, right Beemann?

2018-09-18 01:27:48 UTC

Narrative

2018-09-18 01:28:38 UTC

The gameplay of BioShock is like... Generic Xbox shooter. It's slow but passable, carries some vestigial elements of better games but doesn't make good enough use of them

2018-09-18 01:29:37 UTC

Tbh BioShock probably would have worked better with the formula of Condemned

2018-09-18 01:29:38 UTC

Did you play it on PC or XBox?

2018-09-18 01:29:43 UTC

I've done both

2018-09-18 01:30:25 UTC

Have you played System Shock or System Shock 2?

2018-09-18 01:30:49 UTC

I bounced off of SS2. I played SS a couple years back and it's great

2018-09-18 01:31:28 UTC

You bounced off of SS2?

2018-09-18 01:32:07 UTC

Yeah. It's quite slow and I wasn't getting into the narrative or setting enough to make up for that

2018-09-18 01:32:47 UTC

There's a lot of extra shit that slows down the game more, and your spec means large chunks of gameplay are just locked off in a way that doesn't feel terribly necessary, at least near the start

2018-09-18 01:34:02 UTC

SS can be pretty obtuse, but at least the core gameplay mechanics respect your time

2018-09-18 01:34:36 UTC

Also why I didn't care about the reboot, fwiw

2018-09-18 01:35:32 UTC

I don't remember a time limit in System Shock 2 but I played it a while a ago.

2018-09-18 01:36:59 UTC

Not a time limit, there's just a lot of bloat

2018-09-18 01:38:05 UTC

Like SS1 has a lot of features, but none of them are "stay here and balance all these vats of chemicals" or "you didn't level up guns enough so fuck this loot". They're all part of the core thing you're doing as you progress

2018-09-18 01:38:18 UTC

Which is shooting shit and fixing shit

2018-09-18 01:38:41 UTC

Or selectively breaking shit at least

2018-09-18 02:05:27 UTC

looks like The Verge deleted that awful PC building vid

2018-09-18 02:06:16 UTC

only after they got those sweet CapitalOne shekels i'm sure
