It's just tiring being politically active in Illinois because of how genuinely toxic it is.

2018-10-10 15:14:41 UTC

well you did sure

2018-10-10 15:14:51 UTC

but im not on twitter

2018-10-10 15:14:52 UTC

@devpav So you think it could probably be passed with a ballot initiative in some states?

2018-10-10 15:15:05 UTC

A friend of mine is on twitter

2018-10-10 15:15:08 UTC

really great guy

2018-10-10 15:15:12 UTC

that might be him

2018-10-10 15:15:14 UTC

@devpav In some states I think they'd want it a bit different, Texas for example.

2018-10-10 15:16:01 UTC

Either a ballot initiative or an act of the state legislature.

2018-10-10 15:18:09 UTC

I'll have to look into it. If there's something worth the energy, it's this and maybe term limits.

2018-10-10 15:21:50 UTC

@devpav I find it unlikely that a state legislature would allow this to pass.

2018-10-10 15:22:19 UTC

(unless perhaps it had been enacted in other states successfully)

2018-10-10 15:22:53 UTC

It'd be interesting to do no-primary STV.

2018-10-10 15:23:12 UTC

That'd considerably reduce partisan hackery, since candidates would have to compete directly for a slice of all available votes.

2018-10-10 15:23:52 UTC

Including against their own party, in theory.

2018-10-10 15:24:00 UTC

ye

2018-10-10 15:24:11 UTC

There are state legislatures crazy enough to award their electoral votes to the 'national popular vote' winner.

2018-10-10 15:24:14 UTC

Hilariously it'd be easiest to sell to Berniebros

2018-10-10 15:24:22 UTC

holy

2018-10-10 15:24:26 UTC

moly

2018-10-10 15:24:59 UTC

Cause he would have been able to run independently and win, since runoff voting would have encouraged everyone to vote Bernie as first choice and then second choice safe pick.

2018-10-10 15:25:32 UTC

brb gonna shower like a normie

2018-10-10 15:25:38 UTC

Which is amusing because I really don't like Bernie, but I'd still support the passage of runoff because it'd snipe many even bigger issues.

2018-10-10 15:26:42 UTC

States would have to enact jungle primaries like Cali in order to ensure a runoff election in November.

2018-10-10 15:34:29 UTC

That's one of the issues with leaving this entirely to the state; the transition will be lopsided. But I guess nothing is ever easy.

2018-10-10 15:35:14 UTC

@devpav Instant runoff is what I was talking about.

2018-10-10 15:35:29 UTC

@devpav i.e. no runoff needs to be conducted, because ballots have priority

2018-10-10 15:35:33 UTC

Ye

2018-10-10 15:36:00 UTC

TBH I wish there was even like, options for making strawpolls like that

2018-10-10 15:36:18 UTC

It'd make my life so much easier with running D&D and some other stuff.

2018-10-10 15:36:30 UTC

I could code something up quickly for that.

2018-10-10 15:36:53 UTC

What kind of situation are you talking?

2018-10-10 15:37:15 UTC

You want to set out a set of options, and have people prioritize them, and then collate it as an instant-runoff straw poll?

2018-10-10 15:37:34 UTC

I think what you're talking about is called rank-choice voting.

2018-10-10 15:37:48 UTC

Well, that's one component of it.

2018-10-10 15:38:00 UTC

The specifics of the transfer process are important.

2018-10-10 15:38:33 UTC

Oh, apparently it's in the official feature request roadmap of strawpoll

2018-10-10 15:38:35 UTC

Neat

2018-10-10 15:38:46 UTC

@xorgy Yeah, essentially.

2018-10-10 15:39:06 UTC

Indicate via number or order of selection, one's preference order and then perform an IRV of the results.

2018-10-10 15:39:21 UTC

Realistically it's not difficult to code
