Combined with the treatment of women and workers in factories people wanted to overcome their class roles, hence the socialist revolution. When they won in 1917, there was a civil war against Russia from foreign countries who didn't want a socialist country combined with the civil war and the world wars and the famines and the nascent industrilisation it wasn't a great start.
