so is the laser

2020-03-03 19:02:02 UTC

A joy I wish to share with the citizens of Athens

2020-03-03 19:02:03 UTC

more structural rigidity

2020-03-03 19:02:07 UTC

and when you print with molten metal via lasers

2020-03-03 19:02:15 UTC

there's always gaps left behind

2020-03-03 19:02:18 UTC

you'll see people machining steel after it's been stamped with water cutting systems

2020-03-03 19:02:22 UTC

if only for the width of the laser beam lol

2020-03-03 19:02:23 UTC

Could I hire my local steel mill to craft a metal component for me?

2020-03-03 19:02:23 UTC

@Seven Proxies but they do, lol

2020-03-03 19:02:36 UTC

typicall the metal 3d printers that use wire as a feedstock cost more in wire than traditional welding

2020-03-03 19:02:39 UTC

@ubermensch if you don't know someone there, doubtful

2020-03-03 19:02:53 UTC

99% of steel mills are constantly on contract with constant deadlines

2020-03-03 19:03:07 UTC

yep

2020-03-03 19:03:08 UTC

A buddy of mine worked a lot with water jet cutters.

Far superior to laser cutters, because A they'll cut anything, regardless of thickness, and B. waterjet cuts far more cleanly.

2020-03-03 19:03:11 UTC

I love how 3D printing just took off

2020-03-03 19:03:21 UTC

I love Fraunhofer

2020-03-03 19:03:26 UTC

waterjet is pretty good ngl

2020-03-03 19:03:29 UTC

They have some smartypant people there

2020-03-03 19:03:32 UTC

waterjets are a bitch to maintain though

2020-03-03 19:03:33 UTC

efficient, cheap

2020-03-03 19:03:45 UTC

and they don't perform well with soft materials

2020-03-03 19:03:45 UTC

constant pump failure if you buy a shitty model

2020-03-03 19:03:47 UTC

I'm still not very impressed by 3D printing.

It's all still very gimmicky and prototyp stage in my view.

2020-03-03 19:03:51 UTC

I have a friend in the steel business in michigan

2020-03-03 19:04:01 UTC

additive construction fundamentally is less durable than making a thing out of a bloc of material

2020-03-03 19:04:02 UTC

he had to basically replace all of his units

2020-03-03 19:04:05 UTC

it's what you make out of it

2020-03-03 19:04:08 UTC

Right now I’d like to make components for old rifle designs. Like some straight pull stuff. Nothing too fancy.

2020-03-03 19:04:13 UTC

at least for now

2020-03-03 19:04:14 UTC

because they all shit the bed after a certain amount of hours

2020-03-03 19:04:23 UTC

Remember when there was a fear people would 3D print guns lmao

2020-03-03 19:04:33 UTC

they have, they were shit

2020-03-03 19:04:35 UTC

šŸ˜›

2020-03-03 19:04:38 UTC

I know

2020-03-03 19:04:41 UTC

what is really useful is a plasma cutter mounted to a cnc table

2020-03-03 19:04:42 UTC

@ManAnimal But who the hell wants to cut soft materials anyway? :P

Much more fun cutting 5 inch thick slabs of solid rock with water jets šŸ˜„

2020-03-03 19:04:53 UTC

Water jets are scary

2020-03-03 19:04:57 UTC

for what purpose though?

2020-03-03 19:05:06 UTC

@JackH670 You can 3D print guns... Can't print the ammo though.
