I was a target of bullying. From elementary school when I was the weird kid with a German accent and a satchel, to when it became apparent I was gay, I was bullied. Relentlessly.

I know what a bully’s face looks like. I know the smirk, the cold stare, the “innocent” taunting that precedes the violence.

This is what I saw in Charlottesville. This is what I see at Trump rallies. This is what I see in our “president”. And this is what I saw in the teenage boys in MAGA hats in the video clip that went viral last week.

I know that look.

Maybe I didn’t have all the facts when I first saw the video. Now I have more of them. I will never have them all. I will never have the full story.

But I know the look.

I will not apologize for my triggered response because it was a response that came from a place of experience. I have watched bullies get away with their intimidation all my life. In politics, in school, in the workplace, on TV, EVERYWHERE.
