As far as raising a family I think that's mostly the same, but if you need a bigger house or apartment then the cost changes by area

in my area the costs of living are less then 20% of what they are where my sister lives

Example, in Maryland, you can own a house with an acre of land with 4 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms and pay 1,200 a month in mortgage, but in New York City, you might end up paying 3,000 a month for a one bedroom shitty apartment

If you're making 80k a year, you'll be fine outside of most cities. I've never lived in a big city, so not too sure how well that would translate
