This is how they build telescopes, to capture light.
Large telescope are reflectors. The larger convex lens gets the more distortion. So they made this. It all works the same generally speaking. A telescope will only help so much. It depends on the light collecting ability that is determined by the diameter of the lens. They are making the lens bigger not building 15 mile long telescopes.
