There's no guarantee for anything in life.
Nor anything in reality.
Such is the way it goes.
Persians are the equivalent of scientific consensus today. Mass slaves being driven, where it works in the open field. But of course you know numbers count for nothing in a small guarded pass, where the scientific method is the standard.
Well, no, the analogy was them starting to use more 'explosive' ammunition developed to be fired from large siege weapons.
It turned out to be incredibly effective against Greek formations like Phalanx as well.
Chewing through what was otherwise heavily armored infantry.
Hence the reference to the Phalanx going out of style.
It became obsolete, in a sense of the word.
The analogy would remain limited from explosives in my scenario. There’s nothing explosive unless it passes the scientific method.
But when it does, it becomes incendiary.
In truth, *that* was what really made the Phalanx obsolete, before the Persians and then the Ottomans ever developed their huge siege cannons.
Of which turned out to be incredibly effective.
Indeed, the sight of them alone in several instances was enough for an opposing castle or fortification to surrender.
The history of Ottoman siege weapons is actually a fascinating thing.
Indeed.
A shame the Ottoman Empire is so often overlooked.
Along with other even more obscure empires, that during their time ruled much of the world's commerce, discovery, and culture.
I believe the translation is butchered a bit, but Murad II himself was quite the character.
Though not nearly as much as some of his contemporaries.
These fun facts often aren’t facts. But they are fun.
Rumors or folk lore, indeed.
