@Derek Nelson do you know what plate tectonic means?

2020-01-19 00:04:39 UTC

How can you claim that for sure, when you’ve never observed or measured them?

2020-01-19 00:04:43 UTC

I'm a geology major

2020-01-19 00:05:00 UTC

can you define a plate tectonic?

2020-01-19 00:05:00 UTC

You’ve been over 100 miles deep?

2020-01-19 00:05:05 UTC

hang on

2020-01-19 00:05:06 UTC

Yes or no.

2020-01-19 00:05:12 UTC

please define a plate techtonic

2020-01-19 00:05:19 UTC

you said we have not observed them

2020-01-19 00:05:21 UTC

Nah. You answer my question.

2020-01-19 00:05:24 UTC

👀

2020-01-19 00:05:25 UTC

No

2020-01-19 00:05:28 UTC

You can say
"The truth is simple. The earth is flat"
Now people say
"The truth is simple. The earth is round"
But how can anyone be sure that in the future people will not universally say
"The earth is cubical."
If we are not certain that our current model will not change and cannot be improved by changing the shape, then we can conclude that we don't have the right shape.

2020-01-19 00:05:28 UTC

We haven’t.

2020-01-19 00:05:59 UTC

because people 500 years ago didnt know jack. They were misinformed and also believed in unicorns and fairies

2020-01-19 00:06:19 UTC

they are not 'plate tectonics' they are 'plates'

2020-01-19 00:06:28 UTC

tectonic is an interaction

2020-01-19 00:06:31 UTC

Nobody has ever observed a lithospheric plate. To be specific. Yes, I looked it up.

2020-01-19 00:06:51 UTC

hreppar microplate

2020-01-19 00:07:04 UTC

@he vibin tho how can you therefore assert that 500 years later, a man from the future will not say
"The people of 2020 are ignorant."

2020-01-19 00:07:25 UTC

And how can you assert that they will not conclude a different shape for earth

2020-01-19 00:07:29 UTC

Well yea, we dont know everything. But the shape of the earth is accepted as common knowledge

2020-01-19 00:07:36 UTC

You’re throwing out definitions, but you’re not really making a point to me, when you can’t show me tangible verification.

2020-01-19 00:07:39 UTC

Same case 500 years ago

2020-01-19 00:07:48 UTC

One year in the future people will look back at 2020 and say that.

2020-01-19 00:07:50 UTC

Like humans have literally flew into fuqin space and saw the earth

2020-01-19 00:08:16 UTC

we have witnessed plates

2020-01-19 00:08:21 UTC

What if in the future, people flew out of the universe and looked at it from the outside, and said "Earth is a dodecahedron."

2020-01-19 00:08:27 UTC

we even measure how they interact with each other

2020-01-19 00:08:49 UTC

you cant fly out of the universe lol

2020-01-19 00:08:53 UTC

Show me a picture of this plate in its entirety.

2020-01-19 00:09:04 UTC

atleast not for trillions of years, and we will be dead

2020-01-19 00:09:12 UTC

2020-01-19 00:09:13 UTC

they are literally the size of continents

2020-01-19 00:09:21 UTC

bruh

2020-01-19 00:09:24 UTC

500 years ago, a man must have climbed atop a tall mountain, and said "earth is flat." They might also have thought "one cannot go into space which we do not know exists."

2020-01-19 00:09:32 UTC

Big hiccup then if you ask me.

2020-01-19 00:09:36 UTC

no

2020-01-19 00:09:46 UTC

@Derek Nelson It would be the size of a continent, the only way to photograph it in its entirety would be from space, and you disavow space pics no matter how real the are.

2020-01-19 00:09:50 UTC

Well the problem is, people didnt have rockets 500 years ago. There is a difference

2020-01-19 00:09:53 UTC

Not impossible , people of the future may accomplish great feats
