There's a geometric horizon because the earth is round, and also there is refraction, therefore the actual location is distorted/you get weird optical effects

What I meant is that, because of the negative zoom on a wide angle lense, you can get flat planes just about anywhere. Thats why I said that that photograph was a wide angle lense distortion.
