Cowona-Chan

2020-03-26 04:52:39 UTC

the fed can print money forever though

2020-03-26 04:54:09 UTC

Maybe, but with so much money in circulation it will devalue it over time, you know like inflation

2020-03-26 04:54:54 UTC

Keep printing enough, you end up with what Venezuela's currency is at

2020-03-26 04:55:47 UTC

Or after ww1, the Wiemar republic's mark was so worthless, it was used as wallpaper

2020-03-26 04:56:28 UTC

Technically they can keep printing it, but the results could be disastrous

2020-03-26 04:57:29 UTC

Especially considering the dollar is fiat, meaning it only holds value because we agree it does, as soon as people don't, then it becomes worthless

2020-03-26 05:00:57 UTC

mysteriously we haven't had any problems with inflation though

2020-03-26 05:01:17 UTC

which is why the fed has been so wiggidy wacky with our fiscal policy

2020-03-26 05:07:14 UTC

I mean

2020-03-26 05:07:25 UTC

Japan prints and still can’t cause inflation

2020-03-26 05:08:05 UTC

Well they QE and buy a ton of corporate bonds

2020-03-26 05:09:02 UTC

80 Trillion yen a year in corporate bonds (!)

2020-03-26 05:10:34 UTC

Japan needs a baby bonus

2020-03-26 05:12:10 UTC

Would be economically far more sound than the current mass QE scheme

2020-03-26 06:48:36 UTC

When you massively expand the credit supply and get no inflation, expect bad things.

2020-03-26 06:49:13 UTC

^^^^^

2020-03-26 21:32:20 UTC

I think that print is just to replace damaged or lost currency

2020-03-26 21:32:33 UTC

@Eoppa it'll at least devalue the dollars.
At least I assume it does.

2020-03-26 21:34:27 UTC

@Ronin Not necessarily, it usually is factored into the capital structure, and then when the time comes, that misallocation turns into a recession

2020-03-26 21:35:38 UTC

but wait how can you print more money and expect things to stay the same?
Like wouldn't more dollars mean they're going to be worth less?
I know that Fiat currency is inherently worthless but how can anyone wave a wand and magic more money in existence?

2020-03-26 21:43:26 UTC

Because if it isn't being circulated through the hands of consumers, then the buying power stays the same

2020-03-26 21:47:30 UTC

so it's going to companies.
wouldn't they bring it into circulation?

2020-03-26 22:16:51 UTC

It does go to both, but companies tend to get more because they get larger loans and such often.

2020-03-26 22:17:24 UTC

Credit expansion is typically bad wherever it goes

2020-03-26 23:34:31 UTC

you mentioned that something bad will happen.
so what's going to happen?

2020-03-26 23:34:44 UTC

like hyper inflation or will it be like the depression?

2020-03-27 00:05:45 UTC

When we realize the capital structure is misallocated, that's when a recession hits.

2020-03-27 02:04:32 UTC

@Eoppa you mean when people realize that first all their money got wasted
and then realize that their money is practically worthless?

2020-03-27 02:06:25 UTC

@Ronin yeah, that's when interest rates go up, because there really isn't much resources behind the cash despite what they thought before

2020-03-27 02:06:48 UTC

I wonder how many people actually know that fiat isn't actually worth anything.
