I don't think our culture romanticises rebels per se

I think it does as a byproduct of a high level of individualism

and liberalism

but our culture doesn't seem to appreciate rebels regardless of their motives

case in point, conservative or far right rebels

because our culture isn't a liberal hive mind, there's a decent split of conservatives and liberals in the world

I suppose a better way of putting it is

at least in western culture, but it's probably fair to say in most cultures, we respect and admire someone who is willing to fight for what they believe is right

especially, when it means that they personally have something to lose

it's putting you as the individual second to a moral code, that has a sort of sacrificial element.
