What we do on CrackLife is exactly that: we burn the Spiritual deadwood (people's attachments to the Ephemeral and not the Eternal). When in Purgatory, one's sins are "burned away" and only the Eternal Truths, which are good, remain - allowing the one in Purgatory to ascend to Heaven.
