2017-05-23 20:19:16 UTC

I want to know what you all think about something. I talked to my boss about backdoors in firmware the other day and I asked what he would do if the government asked for a backdoor in our products. He said that he wanted me to include a killswitch for the backdoor as well. How do you guys feel about this kind of stuff? What kind of legal trouble do think I could get into if I were to help obstruct alphabet soup bullshit?

2017-05-23 20:19:17 UTC

try that vape, get high of .15

2017-05-23 20:19:37 UTC

damn, thats tough one

2017-05-23 20:19:44 UTC
2017-05-23 20:19:52 UTC

i dont trust gov

2017-05-23 20:19:56 UTC

sooo maybe yes

a backdoor

they will break in anyway

why cant the govt just ask legally

come on now

2017-05-23 20:20:30 UTC

Because math, basically. Encryption is fun like that.

2017-05-23 20:22:06 UTC

I build low level software for embedded critical systems, some of which have networking hardware and can connect to the internet.

hmm

2017-05-23 20:24:38 UTC

We utilize encryption to create a secure boot chain that starts with hardware. So the system is booted starting with a ROM chip that has a private key hardcoded, and that is used to decrypt firmware such as the first bootloader, then other software like the second bootloader, a kernel, etc.

2017-05-23 20:25:22 UTC

god i need to nerd more... this is alien to me. sigh.

2017-05-23 20:25:27 UTC

So the CIA niggers have to have a hardware backdoor OR get us to include a program that's properly signed to allow other crap.

2017-05-23 20:25:44 UTC

Yeah man, this is what I do for a living. It's a PITA

damn

so stupid

2017-05-23 20:26:23 UTC

so you have those two options only?

2017-05-23 20:27:41 UTC

Alright gents. Fucking enjoyed it. Over and out.Shadilay

2017-05-23 20:27:43 UTC

peace

2017-05-23 20:28:08 UTC

The third option would be very powerful exploits in the bootROM or primary bootloader. Apple actually had a thing in the iPhone 4 where a segment overflow could be used to get the bootROM to zero itself out in memory.

2017-05-23 20:29:13 UTC

That's because Apple is fucking stupid. We use ASLR and we never load stuff at 0x0 in memory.

2017-05-23 20:30:23 UTC

@JarJarBinx shadilay

Apple are fags

2017-05-23 20:43:24 UTC

They really are. Sucks that I need a Mac for work. It was either this or Windows 10 and there's no way in hell I'm using Windows 10.

2017-05-23 20:44:25 UTC

@I_RUN_DEBAIN_STRETCH Agreed. Given that apple is basically just a wrapper on BSD and bsd is a *nix based os. couldn't you use those arguments to move to GNU/Linux

2017-05-23 20:45:23 UTC

it's not like it will cost them anything as long as you can support and maintain it yourself

2017-05-23 20:45:59 UTC

OS X uses a bunch of proprietary NeXT components and a custom kernel, along with other Apple bullshit. There are a few apps used internally at this company and they only work on OS X and Windows.
