What the hell are shootbangs?

Guns. Shooting irons. Pieces. Firearms.

Well, if the USA had some magic button where if they would press it all guns would be removed, and if they after that introduced good laws that would prohibit gun ownership without strict permits etc, then I think they should really press it.

However the USA has lots of guns now so banning them isn't possible.

Why get rid of them? What about self defense?

Self defense can be done with other things then guns, over here we don't have any guns and people don't constantly get harmed or killed by criminals.

So long as guns + mental illness exist, they can't fix the violence.

What do you propose can stand in the role of a gun for someone protecting themselves against a mission oriented attacker?

What mission?

It's a term of art. A mission oriented attacker is one who possesses a clear goal, and is set on fulfilling that goal through the execution of the crime they're about to commit.

A rapist, a murderer, a dedicated mugger, etc.

Tasers, batons, something less lethal is obvious as a gun substitute

In my case it would be way more likely that your attacker doesn't have a gun.

Tasers are barely suitable even against unarmed attackers in light clothing.

And only then at very, very close range.

Pepper spray is reliant on pain compliance, and straight up does not affect a surprising percentage of the population on a physiological level.

Same as tear gas.

And if you've got someone in an altered state, they can function whether you've dosed them or not.

Pepper spray also usually results in contamination of the person using it as well.

You don't carry a baseball bat with you everywhere, though.
