@imig Was there something in particular you were trying to point out with the Corinthians references? Just curious.

2019-12-20 21:29:51 UTC

yes i thought it was very interesting that the original translation
"they have devoted themselves"

was modified in KJV to become
"they have addicted themselves"

2019-12-20 21:29:54 UTC

big difference.

@imig I have to say I don't see the problem but definitions can be shaded by where you're from, how you were brought up, common usage etc. Although I prefer the KJV, I try not to be dogmatic (it doesn't always work, however).

2019-12-20 22:00:38 UTC

are you saying you dont see a difference between "devoted" and "addicted" ?

OK, here's what I see. If I'm addicted to something, I'm devoted to securing it for my use. If I'm devoted to someone or something then I'm addicted to the pleasure that someone or something gives me. Yes, there are connotative differences that can be placed on the two words but context usually clears it up.

alrighty then, to each their own,
i just think my interpretation of the word 'devotion', and yours, are very different.

Years ago I was in a situation that was difficult to deal with. I prayed before going to bed that the Lord would show me something about it. I had a dream that night in the which I found myself in a line of people who were all waiting to talk to a prophet of God. When it finally came my turn to talk to the man, I started into the room he was in but a crazy fellow edged his way in ahead of me. It took the ushers a few minutes to take care of the situation and used a good portion of my time. When I faced the prophet he asked me a question. "What does the word consistency mean?". I answered right away, "It means, that which things consist of.". The look he gave me told me I had the wrong definition. As I was waking up I had no time to correct my statement. I did realize that what he must have been referring to was that I needed to be more consistent in my relations with other people.

When you look for a definition of a word in the dictionary you will often find several different definitions of the same word depending on different factors.
