well I know the exotic animal trade is kind of big in America, you could do volunteer work at a sanctuary, a lot of those kinds of animals get abandoned when people realize they just don't have the capacity to handle an animal such high maintenance.

even less demanding exotic animals like large parrots still really catch people off guard for how much attention and care they need as well as their on going costs and special needs

and I know in the case of large birds, when they get abandoned they are extremely difficult to rehome due to stress.

Yeah, people don’t realize that about birds.

most exotic animals don't get rehomed, if they are lucky they will end up in a sanctuary otherwise they will just get put down, if they don't die due to stress related issues in the first place.

(for context I used to work at a wildlife sanctuary btw xD)

they got a lot of exotic birds in that had been abandoned, luckily the exotic pet trade down under is pretty small for the most part.
