My US friend is telling me that their data was shut off for streaming YouTube? Says it was made illegal last year because too many people were doing it and it shut down in some areas?

If you mean streaming himself play, the isp might have some rules about it, but in no way is it illegal

In fact I believe it is illegal for an isp to monitor and tell what their users can and cannot do

ya'll are crazy, last year the US revoked net neutrality so thats exactly what ISPs can do

we've been fighting to get those rights back

internet users in the US have zero rights right now

if his ISP has made a deal with a competing streaming service (like Amazon or Netflix) then they can heavily modify or even shut off service to competing services

its one of the primary complaints against ISPs in the US
