the concept of indulgences was prominent a few hundred years ago

indulgences are overrated and weren't a massive issue

people paid indulgences to lessen their punishment in purgatory

in countries that are like 90% catholic like the philippines they were definitely an issue

infact had they just listened to luther the reforms would've been done and the church would've merely grown stronger

the issue comes up when the church became increasingly stubborn to change

they are essentially something you do to forgive your sins
