I heard an interesting theory: eventually, perhaps during our lifetime, someone will fire a nuke and initiate a nuclear war. The war will be very brief and decisive. The US will definitely be involved, and less armed countries may team up against us as the nukes fly.

Yes, small places that are remote and insignificant are best bets for survival. I actually think quite a bit of Africa qualifies (because there are no major nuclear strike targets there, due to incredibly low level of regional military power), and places like St. Helena island and such
