I don't think balkanization would really work well currently because we'd still have the same issues politically in those regions with the major cities leaning hard left until they collapse under the crushing weight of the welfare state

If you look at how the US votes the blue areas are VERY concentrated. They also advocate the abolition of the electoral college and want direct democracy. This is why. The few urban areas with dense population would control the fate of the entire country.
