A smaller blade is more dangerous because it can be concealed. You go at a guy with a sword you might as well go at him with a full length shotgun or rifle. Knives are more discreet and can be used suddenly and quickly.

Lightsabers are good weapons for force sensitives, who can subtly predict their opponents movements, they're wieghtless and give little feedback to their weider, which is one of the reasons I hate the duels in the sequel trilogy.
