The translated phrase of the character's reaction is that it illicit 'pagan joy', but he also notes that it reminds him of the warrior culture of literal pagans as opposed to the favorable depiction of Christian saints. It's probably intended to illicit shock, the painting, and to make the viewer see the pagans as savages.
