Egypt was majority Coptic and Christian till the 13th century

and Coptic was still being spoken in the 17th century

The church does this annoying thing, to bolster our numbers, it counts Ethiopians and Syrians who follow the church and it triggers the fuck out of me

Egyptian government estimates around 5-9 million of us, so I mean, we're still here

Surah At-Tawba
9:31
They have taken their scholars and monks as lords besides Allah, and [also] the Messiah, the son of Mary. And they were not commanded except to worship one God; there is no deity except Him. Exalted is He above whatever they associate with Him.

A combination of both:

Mamluks were pretty oppresive, that combined with the Jizya forced a lot of the poorer population to convert since they could not afford to pay it.

That population then mixed with the Arabs, Circassians and later the Turks to constitute the Egyptian Muslim population today.

i thought jizya and zakah goes to the poor

2018-12-03 19:34:53 UTC

2018-12-03 19:36:36 UTC

Jizya is mostly used on military spending

Mamluks were a meme

2018-12-03 19:52:49 UTC

Why people spell it "Mamluk" and not Mameluke.

2018-12-03 19:52:55 UTC

I hate those fucking neo-spellings for islamic terms.

2018-12-03 20:03:36 UTC

It's spelled mamluk

2018-12-03 20:05:18 UTC

Since recently.

2018-12-03 20:05:28 UTC

Mameluke is a traditional English name.

2018-12-03 20:05:36 UTC

It's still used in other European languages.

2018-12-03 20:05:51 UTC

The weapon is still called like that.

2018-12-03 20:06:12 UTC

Mamluk means "owned"

2018-12-03 20:06:18 UTC

Cuz mamluks were slaves

2018-12-03 20:33:29 UTC

Slavery in islam is so weird that it wouldn't be called slavery to anyone who isn't a muslim very weird

2018-12-03 21:10:57 UTC
