To "In many cases it can be mutually beneficial" is somewhat similar to starting a business.

In many ways it's a crucial step for some people to meet their desires and goals in life.

But a person starting it with delusions will pay a heavy price.

It's an exhange with definite downsides and trying to control for those is key.

Painless is also relative. Losing any of my freedom is not painless
