"Lose an hour" I've lost multiple days to such mistakes

2019-03-12 20:53:55 UTC

lol, true.

2019-03-12 20:54:16 UTC

I do PLCs and controller, and usually the compiler tells me if theres a semicolon or somthin missin

2019-03-12 20:54:24 UTC

But sometimes the error is just blank

2019-03-12 20:54:25 UTC

You can lose an hour because congress decides to conserve "daylight"

2019-03-12 20:54:54 UTC

right, but if you do like PHP on a remote server, with output buffering, and errors suppressed, you just get a WSOD...

2019-03-12 20:55:26 UTC

Thats no problem for me at least

2019-03-12 20:55:45 UTC

and you don't know where the offending code is because the customer paid some indian sweatshop to do it and you're trying to trace that shit down...

2019-03-12 20:56:05 UTC

👀

2019-03-12 20:57:16 UTC

outsourcing rarely works... because you do not get back a tested end product. Basically managers need to be told that they are paying for half of the product, and the other half is going to cost more.

2019-03-12 20:57:24 UTC

Usually if the previous programmer from another company u wont get access to his libraries

2019-03-12 21:00:06 UTC

I wrote a script to automate setting up initializing a tftp transfer using a terminal on a serial interface because the commands were repetitive

2019-03-12 21:00:28 UTC

command line for the win

2019-03-12 21:00:47 UTC

It saved me a lot of time, once I got it reliable I told my boss about it and he chastised me because it "wasn't my job to do that" and "if i were another supervisor i would write you up" and "you could get fired for stealing company time"

2019-03-12 21:01:12 UTC

So I kept secretly using it to improve my production numbers and when people asked me how I did it I'd tell them if they knew they would get fired lmao

2019-03-12 21:01:25 UTC

Seriously, there is just so much control you can put in a command line, that a GUI doesn't / can't give

2019-03-12 21:01:32 UTC

Thats a weird take on it from the boss thou

2019-03-12 21:02:01 UTC

Shouldnt

2019-03-12 21:02:07 UTC

Everyone do that?

2019-03-12 21:02:10 UTC

<:tessB:530538307902373888>

2019-03-12 21:02:14 UTC

He didn't agree with it himself, he just knew that he would be forced to make that decision if his boss found out about it

2019-03-12 21:02:19 UTC

It was a shitty place to work

2019-03-12 21:02:25 UTC

@Dick Dastardly™ i am so sorry for bosses like that. So sorry you had a boss like that

2019-03-12 21:02:25 UTC

I don't work there anymore

2019-03-12 21:02:36 UTC

Was he old and stubborn?

2019-03-12 21:02:41 UTC

<:hellyeah:480188652622970880>

2019-03-12 21:03:02 UTC

No, he was basically trying to balance between not being a shitty boss and keeping his job

2019-03-12 21:03:09 UTC

<:hughmungus:532086406043009024>

2019-03-12 21:03:13 UTC

It was a bigger problem than just him

2019-03-12 21:03:16 UTC

Hey all! How is everybody?

2019-03-12 21:03:29 UTC

Hello <:tellmemore:532084430664105994>

2019-03-12 21:03:40 UTC

hi

2019-03-12 21:03:44 UTC

My new job is easier, my boss leaves me alone for the most part, and it pays $3/hr more than my last job lol

2019-03-12 21:03:49 UTC

Wish I had changed jobs years ago

2019-03-12 21:05:31 UTC

I think everyone should work for a poorly run business at least once in their life
