speaking of deserts who does one get water in a desert? I've never been to one so I'm beyond clueless on how to survive there

Not entirely sure but ground water would be my best bet if there's no rivers around.

I can't really workout a reliable way to get water in my closest desert

Ideally you'd find a river then boil water. If you can't find a river you'd have to rely on rain.

Which isn't dependable, yeah, but most don't think about choosing to go to a desert; less humans, better chance at survival as your biggest threat will be other humans.

If I could get enough fuel I'd consider it, I could distill salt water if I can get to the ocean

Though, an electric rig with a means to take the water out of the air or some way to dig deep enough to find water might be a good idea if it's an option.

The former is likely not given water in the air is so low it's useless in a desert. But it's an idea.

Best thing you can do is get out of the city before it goes down

I'm in a small town with the nearest larger city being several miles out. So i'm good on that.
