I think I am being dumb.... I am using powerlifting techniques (strength) but really it's not ideal for my purpose, if that purpose is fighting.

2018-09-29 17:07:59 UTC

Oh good.

2018-09-29 17:08:18 UTC

it's just not his priority...maintaining his flexibiliy and skills is more important

2018-09-29 17:08:36 UTC

a little bit of weightlifting contributes to strength and injury prevention

2018-09-29 17:08:55 UTC

1 day a week enough?

2018-09-29 17:09:06 UTC

If I did 5x5 once a week or should I go twice a week?

2018-09-29 17:09:31 UTC

I'd replace cardio with sparring and just do lifting + yoga + fighting. It seems more efficient.

2018-09-29 17:10:00 UTC

Strength is only good if you know how to use your strength effectively. The MMA fight Jones is a good example, he does powerlifting and MMA, but not everyone can do what he does. just because he made it work, it doesn't mean it will work for you too

2018-09-29 17:10:38 UTC

Yeah, I don't think I'd go full power lifting.

2018-09-29 17:10:48 UTC

Everybody's body is different too, plus there are so many variables that will affect the way you fight

2018-09-29 17:11:28 UTC

I just think it's a matter of picking a priority. Learning how to fight, or getting big and strong

2018-09-29 17:12:09 UTC

Yeah, I think I will cement my big and strong status for the next year and then next year, switch to fighting.

2018-09-29 17:12:11 UTC

If you want to learn to fight, then use weightlifting as a tool for preventing injuries and building a tiny bit of extra strength

2018-09-29 17:12:24 UTC

Agreed.

2018-09-29 17:12:30 UTC

I'll do that 😉

2018-09-29 17:13:25 UTC

There's nothing wrong with being big and strong, then transitioning over to fighting. They're just two different worlds and your body will adapt to the way you train

2018-09-29 17:13:35 UTC

Yup!

2018-09-29 17:13:55 UTC

I've seen some guys that are fucking huge and muscular and they're black belts in BJJ

2018-09-29 17:14:01 UTC

Look at Jocko Willink

2018-09-29 17:14:09 UTC

Plus, I mostly want to validate a keto/low carb + lifting/rowing lifestyle would work for me long-term. Once I get ripped and strong and prove to myself it works... I will feel good going forward.

2018-09-29 17:14:18 UTC

He's my example/goal!

2018-09-29 17:14:26 UTC

I love Jocko

2018-09-29 17:14:38 UTC

Goggins too

2018-09-29 17:15:00 UTC

He's the dude I have been using as my blueprint. I've devoured his book multiple times. I read it once a week honestly. It's an easy read and it focuses me.

2018-09-29 17:15:19 UTC

Yes, Goggins is good but he's a little too extreme in running in my opinion. He's wrecked his body.

2018-09-29 17:15:21 UTC

I have that book on my phone, haven't read it yet

2018-09-29 17:15:37 UTC

I want to be strong and CAPABLE of being a warrior/beast but I don't want to wreck my body unless it's necessary.

2018-09-29 17:15:54 UTC

I will slowly wreck my body once I get back into BJJ.

2018-09-29 17:16:12 UTC

MMA ruined me a little bit

2018-09-29 17:16:26 UTC

a lot of guys have back problems from BJJ later in life too

2018-09-29 17:16:51 UTC

That's why I say to put off weightlifting until you're officially done learning fighting skill

2018-09-29 17:17:02 UTC

Yeah, I think that may be lack of lifting/yoga. If you haven't established a strong body you can break easier.

2018-09-29 17:17:17 UTC

Ah... I see what you're saying. I was thinking the opposite haha.

2018-09-29 17:17:24 UTC

Because when you're older, at least you still have some fundamentals of fighting down

2018-09-29 17:17:30 UTC

Oh yeah.

2018-09-29 17:17:54 UTC

I am 24 lol. I will be 25 by the time I re-enter BJJ. I'd be very skilled by 30 if I stuck with it.

2018-09-29 17:18:06 UTC

It won't take longer than 5 years to become pretty fucking good.

2018-09-29 17:18:13 UTC

And how humbling would it be for a body builder with a huge ego get his ass whooped by a skinny guy half his size

2018-09-29 17:18:18 UTC

At that point, it would be maintenance and a form of cardio lol.

2018-09-29 17:18:26 UTC

exactly

2018-09-29 17:18:27 UTC

Dude, yes! Absolutely.
