I don't know what can be done to change it. Even so-called intelligent people I know are straight up hateful towards actual conservatism. They are legitimate bigots and won't even entertain alternative views
Most people who claim to dislike conservatism altogether are usually far more conservative than they realize.
Same with conservatives for progressivism.
It's actually really not so easy to fall squarely on one side or the other, depending on where you live.

@ETBrooD I think you are correct to say most people don't realize they have conservative views, but in the context of the existing dichotomy of Liberals to Conservatives there is no real conservatism to speak of. Conservatives have no real interest in reducing the scope of government or dismantling social programs, or reducing immigration.
I'd love to see the feds have all of their tendrils removed from provincial governance so the provinces gain back control of healthcare and education
Then we could rework the scope of public education and carve off sections of healthcare that don't make sense.
Then we might actually have the possibility to reduce taxation to a reasonable level

Another thing that could improve things is to add an amendment that requires representatives to prove that they've had X amount of working class experience.
Although that might not be the best solution, but something needs to be done about the fact that there are so many who lack that experience.
It's a similar idea to the one that you must be an American born citizen.
For the case of the US.
One problem with it is that it's not exactly easy to define "working class"
We know who DOES qualify as working class, but we don't always know who DOESN'T qualify
