you haven't

2020-01-22 23:05:50 UTC

and my government forced me to do it

2020-01-22 23:05:59 UTC

you've paid money to random debters

2020-01-22 23:06:10 UTC

who paid the slave owners

2020-01-22 23:06:15 UTC

the money was for slaves

2020-01-22 23:06:16 UTC

We could have just copied Russia and forced the Slaves to pay it off

2020-01-22 23:06:41 UTC

Also when, in the 1880s, the government decided to pay this. Almost none of the governments wealth was from taxation of random plebs

2020-01-22 23:07:06 UTC

so why have we been paying it right up until 2015?

2020-01-22 23:07:10 UTC

it was from merchant duties, many of whom were profiting from slave products, and taxes on estates

2020-01-22 23:08:04 UTC

Probably because WW1 happened and annihilated the country's finances before it was paid off before

2020-01-22 23:08:08 UTC

then WW2 happened and did it again

2020-01-22 23:08:44 UTC

in that case I demand germany pay me reparations for slavery

2020-01-22 23:08:49 UTC

Deal

2020-01-22 23:09:04 UTC

Well if it's WW1 I'm definitely blaming Austria

2020-01-22 23:10:27 UTC

How would they pay reparations though since the Austro-Hungarian Empire doesn't exist anymore?

2020-01-22 23:10:39 UTC

It wouldn't be fair to put it all on Austria

2020-01-22 23:10:56 UTC

Put it all on Bosnia just to make it the least fair possible

2020-01-22 23:10:59 UTC

ez

2020-01-22 23:11:19 UTC

germany has enough

2020-01-22 23:11:30 UTC

they got all that nazi gold

2020-01-22 23:11:52 UTC

and they didn't pay either of their world war bills in full <:peepoMad:611573754060996618>

2020-01-22 23:12:22 UTC

I wonder if the EU does refunds... how much you reckon we paid in over the years.. minus rebates and money spent on us.... a trillion?

2020-01-22 23:12:24 UTC

Well to be fair the first bill was far too high

2020-01-22 23:12:45 UTC

They should have paid the second in full though

2020-01-22 23:12:48 UTC

how do you even go about quantifying it?

2020-01-22 23:13:03 UTC

the EU funds?

2020-01-22 23:13:20 UTC

I mean if I were the French I'd be inclined to shove a enormous pipe up Germany's ass for turning the north and east of my country into a continous warzone too. So I can't exactly fault them for that bill

2020-01-22 23:14:18 UTC

they send us a big fat bill every year

2020-01-22 23:14:31 UTC

The war wasn't really Germany's fault though and when Germany had beaten France in the Franco-Prussian war earlier on the restrictions placed on the French were much more lenient

2020-01-22 23:14:50 UTC

if you look at your tax receipt it will tell you exactly how much you personally sent to the EU every year

2020-01-22 23:14:52 UTC

And that war was absolutely France's fault

2020-01-22 23:18:34 UTC

The Franco-Prussian war was tiny and lasted one year, maybe 900,000 died on both sides. The First World War took 4 years and killed 1.4 million Frenchmen alone. For that you have to get a victory that is worth more than the one gained for a one year war of less than 1/10th the casualty scale. Also the war was in large measure Germany's fault for giving Austria a blank cheque of unconditional support to do literally anything to Serbia. There's a boat-load of literature about the German high-command (who were a prominent government institution, not just a military body) being eager for conflict beyond their natural duty to prepare for the eventuality.

2020-01-22 23:19:17 UTC

Small point but slavery was about as beneficial as the mass importation of low income labour is today.

2020-01-22 23:19:25 UTC

It doesn't help society.

2020-01-22 23:19:31 UTC

What it does is hold it back.

2020-01-22 23:19:57 UTC

It's a way for a rich few to hold onto their position and avoid making real advancements or dealing with the market properly.

2020-01-22 23:20:09 UTC

But, the comically stupid figure of Conrad von Hotzendorf, the Austrian cheif of staff who wanted the war literally to get in a married woman's pants, makes me want to blame Austria entirely

2020-01-22 23:22:11 UTC

I don't see the Royal Family lasting the next decade not with that luuvy tosser Prince Charles becoming King if I have to choose between a Republic and King Charles, I'll go for a Republic.

2020-01-22 23:22:26 UTC

Lord Protector Boris tbh

2020-01-22 23:22:41 UTC

You don't stop being a monarchist just because you have one less than perfect monarch or you aren't a monarchist.

2020-01-22 23:23:03 UTC

Charles will rule, if he even gets to rule, for a decade at most.
