A lot of these things are behind a pay wall which is annoying. A lot of the things the left quote as being said years ago as unacceptable are in the Spectator -- which I subscribe to... and often have a chuckle about the stuff which appears in there.

tbh he's making a good point really on the narcissism that British leaders have in regards to the commonwealth

2020-02-19 09:18:12 UTC

The point is there

2020-02-19 09:18:25 UTC

But as a politician you should think a bit

2020-02-19 09:18:29 UTC

Before saying some questionable Shit

2020-02-19 09:18:39 UTC

Was he a politician then or just a jurno?

2020-02-19 09:18:57 UTC

Both I think?

2020-02-19 09:18:59 UTC

Not sure tbh

2020-02-19 09:19:00 UTC

oh really

2020-02-19 09:19:03 UTC

it was before my time

2020-02-19 09:19:43 UTC

Yeah, Theresa May made a trip to India, and they basically said to her "why should we give a damn about your Brexit after all these years?"
...clearly not what she was expecting them to say to her face.

2020-02-19 09:19:53 UTC

but yeah, it reads as mocking him as if he was narrating what was in someone elses head

2020-02-19 09:19:55 UTC

Ya that is dumb

2020-02-19 09:20:03 UTC

does anyone have an archive link? I'd love to read the full article

2020-02-19 09:20:09 UTC

I mean, India has overtaken us

2020-02-19 09:20:17 UTC

Good for them

2020-02-19 09:20:20 UTC

We aren’t as important as we used to be

2020-02-19 09:20:23 UTC

I'm genuinely happy for them

2020-02-19 09:20:25 UTC

They do have over a billion people

2020-02-19 09:20:32 UTC

Yea

2020-02-19 09:20:37 UTC

They should have passed us a long time ago tbh

2020-02-19 09:20:46 UTC

but as we all know, the wealth of a country means nothing if it's enhabitance are poor as fuck

2020-02-19 09:21:06 UTC

however, I'm aware they're making strides

2020-02-19 09:21:15 UTC

I don't think we'll ever become "not important"

2020-02-19 09:21:29 UTC

by virtue that things stem out from us

2020-02-19 09:21:45 UTC

we'll likely remain as admistrators and consultants

2020-02-19 09:22:34 UTC

tbh I'm not too fussed about how big we are on the world stage

2020-02-19 09:22:42 UTC

big is relative right

2020-02-19 09:23:09 UTC

```In a column published in the Daily Telegraph six years ago, Johnson mocked Tony Blair's globetrotting: "What a relief it must be for Blair to get out of England. It is said that the Queen has come to love the Commonwealth, partly because it supplies her with regular cheering crowds of flag-waving piccaninnies," he wrote. It also mentioned "watermelon smiles".```
2020-02-19 09:24:11 UTC
Guardian article from 2008, so Boris wrote article 20 years ago
2020-02-19 09:24:16 UTC
the question on this one is when did piccaninnies become offensive
2020-02-19 09:24:40 UTC
I never heard the word until it was brought up in the debates
2020-02-19 09:24:53 UTC
It helps bring them out of poverty
2020-02-19 09:25:23 UTC
sorry pep?
2020-02-19 09:25:33 UTC
the word did?
2020-02-19 09:25:55 UTC
So from what I can see here it's amerocentric for it to be offensive: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pickaninny
2020-02-19 09:25:58 UTC
in which case, it can fuck off
2020-02-19 09:26:22 UTC
tbh 90% of racial controversies are Americanisms
2020-02-19 09:26:46 UTC
it does appear that mainly the originiate there, and then they try to apply the same standard to us here
2020-02-19 09:26:50 UTC
which is not acceptable
