Why does a 1st World Nation need aid?

Disaster relief?

Generally speaking, when this sort of fire happens, the Australian government bails out the affected folks. We're pretty good at taking care of stuff like that. But it can take a hell of a long time for that shit to happen.
In the meantime, these folks need food, shelter etc etc. and a bit of help in the short term really helps.
Also, what *doesn't* get helped, are things like animals. A whole lot of forest got wiped out. Which means there are a whole bunch of sick and dying animals that need rescuing as soon as possible. Locals usually get out and help where they can, but once rescued these animals need shelter, food and care. The government aint gonna do shit about that. That's all done with donations.
And, finally, first world nations need aid when the shit hits the fan. And other first world nations help out. It's what we do.
