The best they could do is pull the draconian card and use their overwhelming state power to barricade their own people, knowing they can't ever protect and secure their own citizens safely without it
A virus like this if it was centered in a Western nation would have spread much faster and been much more dramatic than what is happening in China right now because China is an actual Authoritarian nation that tries to get things done, it doesn't have to worry about muh human rights or muh liberties. They just care about solving the problem, in the West we care too much about not restricting people which actually ends up harming others.

Meanwhile Western countries took ages to even begin to consider restrictions, but even when some implemented it they left loopholes like "If they are family members of people from our nation, or people who are in China on holiday but citizens of our nation, they can still come here" it defeats the purpose of quarantine, that is why China tried to have a full lockdown including night-time curfews.
