North Africa, even to this day has a few cultural similarities shared with Sub Saharan Africa, from architecture to language etc. Especially in the older times, the Sahara desert acted as an impenetrable wall between them, preventing immigration and spreading of culture. Only a few trans-saharan routes ever existed, however as the above hieroglyphics proove there was few or even none racial mixing, at least in the ancient times.
"How about the berbers then?" Well, the berbers is an ethnic group that was native in the Sahara since the ancient times (from modern Ethiopia to Morocco). During at least the middle ages they didn't come in contact with sub-saharan africans, that most african americans originate from.
