Unfortunately, this misconception comes from the fact that most people are ignorant regarding the cultural differences that exist between African people. Not all Africans are the same or they belong to the same race. This misconception has reached such a degree that modern blacks in the US are called "African Americans" which implies that their origin is from the entire African continent, while only Sub Saharan slaves were sent to the Americas.
